I don't know if this is serious thinking but I've been chewing over an attitude about abortion I've heard a couple of times recently and I'm not sure what to think about it.

The issue I'm having is that there are a lot of things we as a society decide if people can do or not that I would consider less critical than abortion. If it's not right to ban abortion, is it also not right to ban OTC sales of vicodin? Or sending obscene material through the mail?

I take the purely mechanistic view. There is about 0% chance that the human race will ever come up with a unanimous list of what is right and wrong. As a direct result, most people will always have at least two sets of rules, one for themself and one for others. So the best we will ever be able to do is reach an unhappy medium.

Also, the real world does not need to follow a uniform philosophy. Theoretically there is no victim from someone allowing themself to become an opiate addict. Unfortunately they tend to become a burden and hazard to everyone else. Eventually everybody else decides they have had enough and pass restrictive laws. And before you know it, you have an entrenched industry of law enforcement and incarceration that has to protect it's headcount and budget. Bottom line; nobody gives a shit about your right to get high and it doesn't have to make sense to you. It just is. Its up to you to have a squint at the rules and make your own choices.

The standard should be proof of harm. Vicodin will kill you at fairly low amounts, so it shouldn't be OTC. Harmful stuff should have a gatekeeper in place to make sure people who aren't able to make their own decisions yet aren't harmed by too easy access to damaging substances--just as I don't have any problem whatsoever with kid proof pill bottles. I personally see no problem whatsoever with people being addicts and hurting themselves, but if they nod off and let the baby drown or get in an accident then we have a problem--but the problem isn't access to the drugs in the first place, it's getting fucked up then trying to do stuff that you can't really do while fucked up and that's what gets you in trouble.

Is sending obscene material in the mail still a thing? If so, that's bullshit, needs to be repealed.

Abortion harms no one unless you insist on thinking fetuses are people, which they are not. No harm, no foul. Yes, there are men who get upset by it, but they are not actually harmed. Their feelings are hurt, and that's the extent of it. If we make hurting feelings a legal matter, every guy who sexts someone other than his wife is gonna be in prison and I don't think they're gonna be okay with that. A woman aborting "his" baby is exactly on the level with the hurt feelings from cheating--although his cheating could give her an STD and at that point, there's harm. So sure, make it worth some time in jail for infecting your SO while telling her you're exclusive, that would be fair. And sensible, for that matter. Public health and all, use your damned rubbers, guys.
