October's Onerous Offerings (Mini-rants)
I woke up to see this on Good Morning America, and it just pissed me off.
A 26 year old man was killed by a shark in the first deadly shark attack in Maryland in more than 80 years. It is sad that the young man died, but I assumed shark attack was an understood risk when going in the ocean. The entitled community is in an uproar. ![]() They are talking about using birth control on the seals in order to decrease the shark's food source! Because if they are deprived of their natural food source, they'll just go away. They won't look for anything else. Yeah, I don't see any holes in that plan. Quote:

It is a tough category and yet that is one of the most clueless quotes I have ever seen. I think everything about it is wrong.

Good gods. Sometimes I kinda root for climate change if it would get the idiots to move the fuck away from the beaches. Around here people get pissed AT the seals because they swim up the Columbia and are notorious for stealing fish off the lines--I mean, who wouldn't take advantage of an easy meal like that, right? Pisses off the fishermen something fierce though and they all wanna shoot the seals because WTF could go wrong with that, right?

The plumbers came to check out why the water in the basement STILL isn't going down. Apparently there are some pipes that have separated or something like that. So they have to be fixed. THAT'S going to be a load of fun.
But hopefully that'll be that, and it'll end all this shit. And because of the sucky weather lately, our internet connection has been shit. There's times our wifi network doesn't even show up, so I have to go downstairs, unplug it, restart it, and hope that helps. Speaking of sucky weather -- it's that time of year where the temperature around here bounces up and down. One day it'll be like a normal, fall day, then it'll be back up into the 80s. That's the one thing I hate about living in this area. |

That sounds expensive. I hope it's a simpler fix than ours, which required digging up the yard and driveway and running all new sewage. It cost enough to make me cry.

Unbelievable. My heretofor lovely roomie's brother showed up in SF and is now spending nights sleeping in front of the building. The two are young enough to be unable to balance love for each other with anger about each other's behavior, and go forward with their independent lives. The roomie is uncomfortable with his brother and afraid of what will happen if they associate. The brother swears this does not bother him but does not want to leave. Really, this I need?

So I finished with the Whose Fault Was It and Why thing, giving me freedom not to think about it, and sink into the sadness that I would have, I think, experienced earlier. Everyone figures I'm over it plus I isolate myself when I am upset, and give out don't bother me vibes. Contacted four people who had wanted me to keep in touch. Two theoretically want to see me but won't actually, one had a great convo but no followup, other didn't respond. Yes I do have other friends. I know I should reach out to them more, get out more, start going someplace (say, dog rescue) where a common interest will create social interaction but . . . the black dog won't leave me alone. To quote someone in worse straights, poor pitiful me. |

Like most of my posts, this probably won't be "mini", but...
You may remember that one of my biggest clients moved back in July. I spent several days installing new network equipment, setting up new computers, etc. Well, this client has a remote office with three users. Those users remote desktop into Windows 10 virtual machines to access the POS system (which also requires Outlook). In the middle of August, one of those virtual machines developed a strange problem: RUNTIMEBROKER was randomly shutting the machine down. It used to be once a week maybe, but now it's every day. A brief bit of background: Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps - also called "Modern apps" or "Microsoft Store apps" - have a number of advantages. For one thing, they have to pass a code review with Microsoft, so it's unlikely for there to be malware in a UWP app. They're also sandboxed, meaning if there was a malware UWP app, the damage it could do is limited, because it's isolated from the system. They're centrally updated by the Microsoft Store app, so there's no need to open 30 apps and click Help > Check for Updates. Most importantly, they use a smartphone-style permissions system: just as Skype for Android explicitly requires permission to use your webcam and microphone to make video calls, so does Skype's UWP version. And RUNTIMEBROKER.EXE is a system app that checks those permissions before an app actually launches, to make sure the app is requesting the proper permissions, and that they're granted. OK, so. I've done every damn thing I can think of to fix this. I scanned the VM for malware and viruses. I ran CHKDSK in case the virtual hard drive had corrupted. I ran SFC /SCANNOW to make sure that Windows' system files hadn't been altered. I cloned one of the working VMs, but as soon as I configured it for the user in question, the issue came back. I moved the VM from one server (with the other VMs) to another (where it's the only VM). Since all VMs were logging in via the same AD user, I created a new user just for this VM. NOTHING stops RUNTIMEBROKER.EXE from shutting this VM down once a day! So, at my wit's end, I called Microsoft. They wanted $49. That's fine - they charge for support like everyone else, and I'm just gonna pass that cost on to the client anyway. The person who answered my call was a nice Indian lady... who sounded like she was taking my call while riding the NYC subway. It wasn't easy to understand her to begin with, but with all the background noise in that call center... sheesh! But eventually she transferred me to an engineer... who looked at a few things, then ran SFC /SCANOW, stopped it at 11%, then reinstalled Windows 10 on the host. Yes, this "server" is running Windows 10, not a server flavor of Windows. This client was having severe financial troubles back in 2012, when the "server" was purchased, so I saved them $1,000 by buying a desktop OS instead of a server OS. In any case, let me reiterate: the engineer reinstalled Windows 10 on the host - which wasn't having any problems at all - instead of, ya know, the actual VM I'm having trouble with. I asked how this was supposed to help, but he hemmed and hawed and asked me to just let the reinstall run and he'd call me back in 20 minutes. Of course, he didn't call back. The next day I called MS back. Only this time the engineer I was transferred to was like "well, since this is a domain, you need commercial support, which is $499 per incident". I secretly knew this to be true, but had hoped I could sneak the issue by with "regular" support. So I asked the guy: "well, I called yesterday and explained the issue with the 'engineer'. I didn't hide anything about this being a business. In fact, the first words out of my mouth were 'I have a client who has a remote office with three employees' and he didn't care. But NOW you care?" More hemming and hawing. So this happened: Quote:
I called back the next day and got my $49 refunded. So I've got that going for me. And I've also left out a lot of the minor annoyances not specific to Microsoft - like being put on hold for long stretches, having to spell my name 18 times 'cos the Indian lady can't get it right, even with the NATO alphabet: Quote:
Also, fuck the Caps... especially Tom Wilson! |

Me and the 'Elf went out to breakfast on the patio at our favorite neighborhood Diner. I had a turkey sausage Benne with green chili sauce. There was a touch of Autumn in the air. Which for Phoenix is the low 80's. I've been waking up to the mid 40's so the warmth was nice. We left Chuck at home this time cause my new car is a two seater.

We're flying up to Washington next weekend for a long-planned and sorely-needed vacation. I woke up this morning to that unmistakable sensation at the back of the throat which indicates that a cold is coming on. Dammit! I hate traveling when sick. And if it really is a cold, I'll pass it on to Mr. brown, who'll come down with it probably mid-vacation.
I rummaged out some zinc lozenges and am sucking on one right now, though I don't know if they're effective. I had better go and buy some Theraflu and purse-size Kleenex today so that I'll have them on hand to pack along. Once in awhile, what seems to be a cold just fizzles out and doesn't develop. I hope that's the case this time. |

I don't know as I've ever seen this many flood warnings for Kansas at the same time. And rain will continue through the week. We'll be okay here in Wichita except for the usual street flooding, but rivers elsewhere are starting to threaten several highways. Sure glad I'm not on the road any more. |

I've arisen, but I shine about as much as 40-grit sandpaper. God will have to fend for himself today.
I finally took Social Security (early) and quit that hideous job. Eight years of sleep deprivation was enough. I'll keep playing organ until I can't or the church folds (impossible to tell which will happen first). On top of this the old cat, Van, died a couple of weeks back. That hit me a bit harder than I expected. (My wife's cat [the "Trojan Horse"] is taking up the slack. Just now I caught her apparently trying to flick fleas into my coffee.) On the positive side, I'm seeing rather more of my grandson now. He's two, and his volition is developing as rapidly as his vocabulary. Hang on, Nelly! (And, yes, I'm already giving him "piano lessons".) |

![]() I don't know how many churches there are where you're at, but apparently organists are in high demand. Our parish is being merged with the one to the north (which was a spin out of ours many years back due to population growth) in the big diocesan reorganization. Turns out they don't actually have a music director on staff, so our perennially disorganized director will be pulling double duty. Not sure how that's going to work as some of the masses overlap. Didn't ask. Don't wanna know. Not gonna do it. Coworker pointed out to me a government procurement solicitation for church organist for a military base somewhere in I-didn't-care-enough-to-pay-attention. Despite churning out three music loving kids, I haven't conned any of them into playing piano. Maybe it skips a generation. |
