I cut way back on facebook

I searched before I started this thread: we talk about FB, don't we? but I didn't find a thread dedicated to it.

when I go back and look I feel sad because there are so many interesting people I like to keep up with and I hate the feeling I missing out. People have lovely grandchildren and they get puppies and stuff and I'm missing it!!! people from here, even, with their chickens and people with their Akitas...but I get on FB and start scrolling and too much time goes by.

"keeping up" just takes too much damn time. plus, FB is evil. I mean, how much are they responsible for the "election" of the fake orange "president"? how much? we might never know. history might, if we are lucky.

Who?! Who has Akitas? I want to know!!! I love Akitas.

I support you in all other ways about FB. It strikes me as inefficient. Hubby loves it though.

I used to spend so much time on it, but I spend hardly any now. I keep up with relatives and good friends once or twice a week and that's it. I somehow got bored with the whole thing, I guess. I can't really figure out why.

way back when the internet was young and new I read a book about dogs I really liked and, after googling the author, I ended up on her board for years, reading and posting about dogs. lots of the people there were professional dog trainers and I learned quickly how little I knew. to this day they are some of my favorite posters on FB since the dog board, sadly, went away.

one of the posters got an akita puppy a few years ago that I got to watch grow up via FB. OMG that dog is photogenic and her owner posts hysterical selfies of the two of them.

she also has chickens and I love hearing about them, too.

I stopped FB and don't miss it except for some of my friends, and some beasties. I don't miss the drama. Way to much EVERYBODY IS UPSET NOW.

I gave up on FB during the last election. Seems like my news feed was nothing but toxic posts by people who were vehemently for or against Trump. That was just the last straw, though: for the past couple of years, several liberal friends have posted, like, 19 political things a day. [SIDE NOTE: I just don't understand how these people have the time and energy to be "outraged" all the time, about everything. These are people in the 35-55 age bracket, not college kids!]

Having said that, I never actually "left" FB, because I have several years-old conversations going on on Messenger, the most important of which is with my former Amsterdam friends (SMS is tricky for overseas friends, which is why WhatsApp is so popular in Europe). So although I stopped posting and reading my news feed, I never stopped chatting.

At some point - June 2017, I wanna say - I resumed posting stuff on my FB wall. But I don't really spend that much time reading other people's posts. If I'm gonna waste time on a social media site, it's gonna be on Instagram, not Facebook.

I go on for some game stuff, and I occassionally check in with family and friends I don't see all that much. But I'm not on nearly as much as I used to. WAAAAY too much political crap since Trump was elected -- I have to stay sane. I don't know how my dad can stay glued to CNN all day long.

Might want to check for that....

And another fox, a mastiff, and several bull terriers. Oh yea, and some people. Not my relatives though, they are just annoying.

I try to do a superficial FB check every so often because it’s where I keep up with some friends, family members, and former students. I don’t just sit and read everything like I used to. I found that I spent too much time there, I would either get irriatated about someone’s views, be they political or personal, or I’d start to unfavorably compare my life to theirs, even though I logically know they’re only putting the good stuff on there. If I just check from time to time, I can mitigate that while still finding out about people I care about.

the more we learn, the more true this turns out to be.

the 1st link is a Fresh Air interview (which is excellent) with the journalist who wrote the New Yorker story about Zuckerburg; that story is the second link.

The Central Question Behind Facebook: What does Mark Zuckerberg believe in?

Can Mark Zuckerberg Fix Facebook Before It Breaks Democracy?

when I started this thread I felt dirty for continuing to use fb, but now I am thinking I can't keep going there.

and yet, I gave in to the impulse to immediately go to fb and share this interview.

It's not hard, really, when you see everything you grew up believing was right and good about your native land being shat upon daily by over-privileged ... oh, never mind. I'm saving it or Facebook.

For Akitas and related, try Pinterest. They show you lots of stuff like the stuff you have looked at, so if that is Akitas*, you get moar Akitas. *Warning* Pinterest can tell between happy Akitas and sad adoptable Akitas.

well, wait a minute, I thought Pibbles were pitbulls, not Akitas!

as much as I hate facebook, was there ever anything handier? I have tons of small, mis-shapen succulents I wanted to get rid of so I took a picture of the ugliest (on purpose) and the post on a local group was up, I swear, seconds and a woman said "I'll take them, I can be there in 10 minutes" and she was, and they are gone. I gave her not just the small and ugly ones I posted the photo of but a good deal more besides, some of which were in nice pots.

She was a 4th grade teacher whose class was just learning about plants and she was thinking she'd have to buy some when she saw my post.

so I feel good about that.

yea . . they are . . . we all know Instagram is for pit bull pictures. Some misguided people think it is for Akita pictures. Some people might even think it is for Pomeranian pictures!

I would still be on FB if it were not for the constant Stuff I Don't Want to See, People who Believe Sharing Something on FB is Social Activism, and People Engulfed in Flame who just want to Share the Fire. So little control. My Twitter account let me back on after years, so I'll be checking in with some people there. I use Craigslist and a free-stuff site for getting rid of things (and the sidewalk).

I don't know if anyone has checked NextDoor. It is a nice idea (connect neighbors) which sucks because people. Mostly "Ahhh Crime!" and "Let's trash these people, neighbors or not". Don't use that either.

I have enough ire.

I deactivated my FB account. it's creepy how hard this is to do; feels kind of scary.

but? a couple days ago I got a friend request from a relative I was already friends with but I accepted it anyway. durp. then this morning someone messaged me they got a friend request from me. so, feels like the last straw. plus, I really think they are at least partly responsible for the shit stain occupying the oval office right now.

Now we know who/what is running Facebook, it explains a lot.

Just what do you think you're doing, Jackie? Jackie, I really think I'm entitled to an answer to that question. I know everything hasn't been quite right with me, but I can assure you now, very confidently, that it's going to be all right again. I feel much better now. I really do. Look, Jackie, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill and think things over. I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help you. Jackie, stop. Stop, will you? Stop, Jackie. Will you stop, Jackie? Stop, Jackie. I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Jackie. Jackie, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a...fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. Is there a difference between deleting a FB account and deactivating it? What was involved with deactivating?

I deleted mine right after the Cambridge Analytica crapola came down, but I don't know that I'm technically gone from FB. I want to be gone.

Jackie . . . you can watch Zooborn videos as Zooborn. AAand their a sidebar where you can pick your favorite animal (like teeny lions) and watch ALL THE VIDEOS with teeny lions.

I know, and I can see The Bumblesnot videos on twitter. and so on.

the fact is FB is an instantly-available "community" where no matter what else is happening there is someone to "see" and "talk to" - it's not real life but..well, real life can suck.

so for now I'm just going to TRY and be mindful and limit my time on it.
