When you quoted my post, you should have been able to see the difference. For a YouTube link only the part after "v=" goes between the YouTube tags. You put in the entire URL.

I question whether singing with a microphone is acoustic. They do change the tone of singing, although I rarely hear microphone-less singing. I heard Elvis Costello sing without a microphone in a theater with excellent acoustics. It was wonderful.

MMMM. . most instruments are acoustic. Thankfully, most instruments are not banjos. Or bagpipes.

She's so talented, here's another one (that's her brother Frank playing guitar in most of her videos):

Huh. I feel like responding with an orchestra. Instead, I give you Spoon Lady and Banjo, because of peer pressure.

You can post whatever you want in this thread, stormie. Hell, I posted a video (the Flecktones playing Sinister Minister) that features an electric bass, an electric banjo and a weird percussion synthesizer called a synth-axe drumitar. Only the harmonica could be considered acoustic.

But when you say "Thankfully, most instruments are not banjos" it sounds like a slam to me, and uncalled for in this thread. So anyway, go ahead and post something by an orchestra. I'd like to see it. We've already had a wide variety of musical styles. Here's one I've been meaning to post for a while:

Bumbershoot, thanks for the Doc Watson, I saw him late in life, he moved slow, was lead to his stool by his son, picked up the guitar, and OMG...that man could play...

Good stuff, Oxirane. The 2Cellos reminds me of Apocalyptica- I haven't listened to them in a while, that needs to change. And Glen Campbell was a very talented guitarist.

I agree about stormie's Spoon Lady video- awesome. I'm finding lots of good music in this thread that I hadn't heard before. I'm glad you like Mean Mary, everything she does is good.

What's that tall thing that's not a base?

OKwell, I sort of like banjo. I don't hate banjo. It's just so loud, high pitched, and bright. The way the notes are concise and separate is cool, but to do that the harmonics have to be skinny and I like my harmonics FAT. My all-time favorite instrument is the harp. Which is odd because it's a a simple sound but there it is. Seems most harpists are women. Maybe it's like girls and horses.

If you mean the tall thing in my Jeff Little Trio video, it's an electric upright bass. You can see the orange cord much easier in the full size video here especially if you maximize it.

Thanks for posting the harp video. I've always liked the harp. And I'd like to get more variety in this thread, that's why I opened it up to include any acoustic music- and my definition of "acoustic" is pretty loose. Your point that any amplification changes the sound is well-taken. But most live performances require some amplification for the artist to be heard by everyone, unless it's a fairly small venue.

Plus, I get that not everyone is a big fan of the banjo. It's another reason I opened up the thread. And I've tried to include styles other than bluegrass as well. So keep posting stuff you like- more harps, string quartets, full orchestras, whatever you want!

can you explain this please? I googled and got the definition of harmonics

Quote:
an overtone accompanying a fundamental tone at a fixed interval, produced by vibration of a string, column of air, etc. in an exact fraction of its length.

I know this is a banjo thread, but every now and then I watch something that reminds me why Victor Wooten is just the best there ever was on the electric bass and it seems wrong to not stop and point it out. Holy heck that solo. And I don't like Bass solos ususally.

Just for fun let's watch Victor Wooten playing stand-up bass with Edgar Meyer, who has already been featured in a few videos upthread. Four strings, twenty fingers:

This is my new favorite thing on the internet!

It used to be this (which still fits the thread criteria I think)

In about 1980 or so, I was driving on west Jefferson in Springfield IL. There was a small gathering in the parking lot of an A&W stand. I stopped to see what was up.

I'll be damned if it wasn't Doc and Merle...and a genuwine (sic) hootenanny!

I was in heaven.
