Someone talked to John recently, and he was doing fine. I don't know if he'll be back, but I miss him. He was a good contributor to the board. I would characterize him as a right-leaning moderate too.
Glad to hear he's OK. He was very close to my age, so mid 60s. I don't think he was clearly liberal or conservative, but very common sense, not jumping on anyone's bandwagon. I hope he hears about TubaDiva, even if he doesn't return he may want to know.

I think Springtime was asking when the phrase showed up on Discourse, as they're still working on the finer points of the transition.

Holy crocus... his 11-year "gotcha ya" was so important that DrMouth-"I hate the PIT; the PIT shouldn't exist; the PIT is nuthin' but a place for a bunch of meanie-weanies to make fun of people!!!!!"-Breth... POSTED IN THE pit!ii!6!!

A fact which will be remembered next time he starts bitching about the PIT in ATMB, I'm sure

It was put to hilarious use when Dopers got together and vandalized the Wikipedia entry of a random Indian village that was written out like a puff piece, changing the section that said something like "Rajapamala is home to very many charming and interesting people" by adding "plus a few total dipsticks."

"...but if she rises from the dead as a zombie, we'll be glad to have her make those changes for ya."

Ashtura's claims of not seeing the announcements about Tuba Diva are just precious, considering that that thread was posted in ATMB, where the "no admin functions for now" thread is stickied right at the top.

I guess it's proof that REALLY no one reads the stickies.

IMHO, TP2B took the cheapest, easiest for them, least time intensive method of solving the problem. They dumped the mess on Tuba and closed the door, telling her to deal with it and that they were done investing time or money in the quagmire of whining users. So, like a father on Xmas eve, dutifully trying to assemble a box of parts into a super toy for his kids, she did what she could with instructions written in Chinese and missing parts and dissatisfied users.

I really think TPTB are close to done with investing any time in the SDMB, it's just more trouble than it's worth. That was evidenced by Tuba's last directive, "DO NOT EMAIL the PAPER's STAFF or you'll be BANNED."

I've never noticed Ashtura before, but he coincidentally just made an appearance in the Trolls R Us omnibus Pit thread, starting here. I'm picking up a Septimus-style wacko vibe from him.

ETA: Ashtura responds in the Pit to explain that he didn't know this "TubaDiver" guy who hardly ever posts anything anyway.

Yeah, it certainly seemed, from that warning, that Tuba might have received a message from the STM folks saying something like, "Hey, we've been getting some complaints from SDMB members. We don't want to deal with any hassle here, so you need to nip that in the bud or we'll just shut you down."

I wonder if he calls mixed-race couples and their kids "zebras" and waits for the laugh track. I mean, George Jefferson did that constantly and everyone thought it was DY-NO-MITE! ::laugh track::

Maybe but more likely it was just extremely embarrassing to have these losers complaining to the higher ups. I doubt anyone in the newspaper business is actually going to get worked up by some cranks emailing them.

Agreed. That's par for the course. That said, what kind of asshole would email the newspaper to while about Discourse? They had to change to something and Discourse was as good a choice as any and at least take a week or two to try to get used to it. Now that I have been using it, there are definitely some things that I don't like as much but there are things that I like much better.

Some people can't help but be entitled idiots. I still miss the old format, browsing threads in general was easier but overall Discourse is fine and I tried to make it work and help others from the beginning. I do like many of the new features and wish old SDMB had the features GB has.

It's definitely growing on me.

I still sort of wish that you could choose to split threads into discrete pages, rather than have continuous scrolling. Also, when they have someone available again to do admin-type work, I'm going to push for the 3,500-character limit to be massively increased. It's just way too short.

I really like the side-by-side composing and preview panes.

That definitely needs to be tweaked. I am sure they will when they can. I really hope the ecg will volunteer to help with the technical side.

I was taken aback by the omission of Black Lives Matter from his all-purpose reusable OP, but I see that he eventually got around to mentioning BLM in post... uh... fuck, posts aren't numbered?

His username reminds me of how call centers in India would train their employees to make small talk about American sportsball.

He must suspect that Dopers are on to him, because he just started a new thread titled "Is anyone here tired of Trump and McConnell?" Unfortunately, he's only able to keep up the charade for one sentence before shifting back to concern trolling about those hopelessly inadequate Democrats.

Not that I'm aware of, but I do like that spam posts are automatically hidden if enough people flag them. I wouldn't have minded being given a modship if I were required to only remove spam and not get involved in those pesky people issues. Now, it's easy to at least warn everyone which should (but probably won't) dampen the spammer's enthusiam a bit.

Interesting. Ike_Witt got a warning for calling a horrible person a horrible person. The content of the offending post is hidden but you can click through to see it. More interesting is that Ike's public profile is shown as hidden. Can a user do that, is it an artifact of the warning, or what? https://boards.straightdope.com/t/th...-out/912577/37

Now I'm wondering if Discourse will hide content if enough people report it even if it is from a long-standing member. So the downside of that is it could easily be abused. The upside is that it probably won't and therefore should, but won't, put paid to the canard that there is some over-arching conspiracy to hound out certain voices. If there were, you bet all of their posts would be reported and thus hidden. (I know that you can click on the link to see the hidden content, but still).

Man, it wasn't where I expected (under Profile) but there is an option to turn off one's public profile in Preferences under Interface, at the bottom.

Users can hide their own public profiles. It's under Preferences / Interface / "Hide my public profile and presence features". I'm not sure why the lords of discourse think users should be able to hide the whole thing, rather than just personal or contact information, but there ya go.
