Sure, pal. So many posts, who could keep up?

Anyone have news of Cochrane? He hasn't posted on either board since the 3rd.

I've PM'd him and pinged him via @Cochrane once prior to this. Nothing. I hope it's just a matter of not having the internet where he's isolating.

Check out the slider on the right.
The post number given by the slider on the right may be off by several numbers from the post number that's given if you click on the time posted in the post itself.

Which one is supposed to be right I have no idea.

Yeah, it's a mess. If you slide the slider a bit, it should briefly highlight the post that it's attached to. (At least it does in the "Sam's Simple" theme.)

It's tiring, sometimes, providing answers to questions that people could find through google. Or even just Wikipedia (how about googling for the Wikipedia page!?). But nothing beats the rando walking in with information that’s 35 years out of date.

You can also click on the thing that looks like two links from a chain link fence. That'll give you a URL, which you can paste to go directly to the post. Or the last number is the post number. Like in https://boards.straightdope.com/t/tu...rial/914742/32, it's post #32. I do miss the vB style of having it visible at a glance. Are there any themes that show it?

Yeah, I'm still alive. I went into the hospital without taking my cell phone charger with me and didn't want to drain the battery. I'm in a rehab facility now until I test negative and once more am deemed safe to be about in society.

I am so. Fucking. Tired. Of armchair admirals who want to bring back the battleship and whose knowledge of naval warfare is limited to what they learned from watching history channel documentaries twenty years ago or similarly shallow reading of popular history books.

You can almost set your calendar by the yearly bring back the battleship threads. They weren't even great at battling ships in world war 2, why should they be a good idea to invest in now?

I've watched those same documentaries, and battleships are a fantastic way to efficiently dispose of thousands of your own sailors when they go down with all hands due to a torpedo strike, or the ammo store explodes, or you get swamped by a rogue wave and someone left a bulkhead open.

Plus those ships would probably cost billions to produce today, so when you make the noble decision to scuttle it insted of letting the Bad Guys get their hands on your technology...

Bad memories of the Falklands... I'll ask here because that thread: Was that the last big battleship war?

There were no battleships engaged in/around the Falklands. It is, however, the go to example for war at sea in the missile age. Not that there haven't been other examples (India and Pakistan had a few spats in the 70s as I recall, then there was the so-called "Tanker Wars" in the 80s, an Israeli ship was hit by a missile in the last decade or two, and a task force of US ships were targeted by cruise missiles and responded defensively just in the last five years), but in terms of the number of ships engaged and level of documentation available (to include video) for what happened, the Falklands War is still perhaps the most prominent example in the discourse about what a future conflict between near peer navies might look like, assuming the conflict was kept regionalized and strictly conventional (non-nuclear).

Battleships haven’t been used since the Gulf War, when the US retired the last of the Iowa-class (pretty much for good). Battleships haven’t been used for anything beyond shore bombardment since WWII, and even then it was mostly shore bombardment.

So in the Falklands they were troop transports and aircraft carriers? Shows what I know... or what I have forgotten.

Destroyers and frigates, plus troop transports and an *aircraft carrier. And submarines. And the Argentinians had a cruiser. Which they lost. In the words of a Roger Waters, "And Maggie, over lunch one day, took a cruiser with all hands..." of course it wasn’t all hands. Only a third of them.

*ETA: Actually, the RN deployed two aircraft carriers.

No BBs in that war. The biggest ship that participated was a light carrier. Most of them were CGs or smaller. The biggest one sunk was an ex-USS WW2 CL.

Hmmm, that's quite a conundrum. I can understand the frustration but I don't think he's a troll, and it wouldn't be worth it to start a whole thread pitting him, and there isn't a "pit random small things you just want to curse over" thread.

This is where the fucking ability to curse someone the fuck out in any fucking thread like on the mother-loving Geeb would have come in handy.
