Happy Saturday, all.
![]() This afternoon, Mr. Duck and I will be attending an annual Christmas in July event hosted by a friend. There's going to be a gift exchange, and we're bringing probably the most boring two gifts--a fire extinguisher and a carbon monoxide detector. (Oh, a side story. When we were camping recently in our little travel trailer, we managed to set off the smoke detector just by making coffee in the morning...at 6:30 before any of the campers around us were awake. Nobody stirred or yelled, but Gah!) My food contribution will consist of 64 homemade sausage rolls and a giant salad. I tried yesterday to buy a big container for the salad, and couldn't find one (?), so I've decided to use one of the huge Ziplock bags I have on hand for non-food items. It's a stack-and-fill design. When it's carefully layered with different coloured lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, yellow peppers, mushrooms, green onions, and radishes, I predict that it will either look amazing or horrible. I'll report back! ![]() The bags I'm talking about: https://www.amazon.ca/Ziploc-Storage...85830069&psc=1 |

![]() What GREAT news about the avocado plant, Oxi! I'd like to see a pic if not too much trouble. I'd post a pic of my Christmas cactus, but I gave it a massive trim in preparation for repotting and it looks ridiculous. It usually has long drooping leaves and branches, however, it's easier to work with when there's less of both. Right now, it reminds me of a poodle or that one guy in The Three Stooges with the stupid hair. Just googled and it's Moe, but Larry's not too far off, either. I think I have a pic from when it was in full bloom. I have a philodendron that's special, too. It was in a plant basket from DH's mom's funeral in 2006 and travelled with us from Chicago when he moved here. It's seen a lot of I-90! My SIL in Illinois wanted cuttings a few months later. Being a fairly hardy plant, I sent them to her with a baggie and wet paper towels. They survived and my grandplant is thriving. ![]() |

Congrats on becoming a Great-Uncle, Wolfie!
I don't have any old plants. I once had some, back in the 90s, but between a cat and my lab at the time, they didn't make it. They both constantly knocked my plants over or tore them out of the pots. I gave up on indoor plants after that. I do regret not being able to move my Edelweiss and Enzian wildflowers from my old house to my new house. There was just so much going on during the move that I completely spaced, and it just seemed weird to go back to the new owner and ask to transfer the plants. She has since moved on and new people live there. I've been by my old house many times and the Enzian didn't make it. Not sure about the edelweiss because it was in the backyard. My mother managed to bring those from Germany somehow and I kept them going for 11 years. Plans for today include edging around my back patio, mowing the lawn, power washing the back patio, and then spreading some soil and grass seed in the bare patches of the back lawn. I need to add birdseed to one of the feeders too. I just filled that sucker three days ago and it's not a small feeder! We have constant activity at our station and it's just fun to watch them all. Between the birds visiting the various feeders and birdbath at the station and the hummingbirds visiting the plants surrounding the station, it's a very busy place which means constant hosing of the pavers below it, but that's okay. I think I had mentioned up thread that we had American Goldfinches come visit and hang out all day. Unfortunately, that was right around the 4th of July and after the fireworks, they never came back. Still, it was nice seeing them there. I still have other finches come to visit, plus the nuthatches, chickadees, flickers, juncoes, and various other birds. The towhees and robins hang out on the ground looking for bugs and worms. Well, I should finish my coffee and get to gettin'. |

I got some decent sleep after a lot of yard work yesterday although it still wasn't enough. I fell asleep at 10:30 pm which is outrageous. I'm a night owl and I can't remember the last time I fell asleep that early. I may have to turn in my "official night owl" card if this continues (which I don't expect). I woke up at 3:30 am and couldn't fall back to sleep. So I continued flooping for a bit, did a few household tasks, and went to the farmer's market when it opened. Scored some beautiful apricots and nectarines, a loaf of challah bread, and a small chocolate zucchini loaf.
I hope everyone's had a good day. The weather's been PERFECT here south of Seattle. |
|
||||
the weather has been just awesome.
I saw a car for sale and when I contacted the owner's daughter she gave me the VIN. odd, how not all the websites have the same info about it. nicb.org/vincheck and vehiclehistory.com both report it was salvage in 2020, which was not found on iseecars.com and vincheck.info. I am guessing the .org is more reliable. |

The salad-in-a-bag that I took to a potluck looked pretty darned festive, but not until the bag was opened; I'd forgotten that the colours would be muted through light blue plastic. D'oh!
We are in a spell of very damp weather. Even when we're not getting showers or flat-out pouring rain, the humidity is 100%. I was just outside for a few minutes, and when I came in, I had the tiniest, tiniest droplets on me. It's cool. Literally. Last year we had a drought, so I'm not complaining. ![]() |

Weekend update:
Friday night it rained, so no progress was made on the steps. I spun/plied yarn while watching "E.T." with Swimmy. Swimmy was a reluctant viewer to start. She said E.T. looked like a flying potato, and she hoped it wasn't scary, and she didn't think she was going to like this movie. We go through this with pretty much every movie I recommend to her - she thinks she won't like it, then she does. Because Mom is not stupid and knows good kids movies. This was no exception. She liked the movie, even the super creepy part at the end where they tent the house and E.T. turns all gross looking and the NASA guys are chasing everyone. We both agree that E.T. is not the cutest. Never understood what people saw in him. I stayed up way too late fighting an annoying ticking noise in my spinning wheel that was coming from the central hub bearing and was a bitch to try to fix. We reached a detente - the tick is less loud and I munged up the threads on the female part of the hub axle a little and will never by able to get it apart again anyway. Watched "The Zookeeper's Wife" and Bo Burnham's "Inside" while fighting with the wheel. Saturday it rained. All freaking day. So no progress was made on the steps, but I did get the house clean, the laundry done, fought with the spinning wheel some more, and made a Bullseye Emporium trip with the big girls. Sunday was for singing and working on the steps. We worked from the time I got home from church until around 8:00 in the evening, with breaks for meals and some short breaks for robin feeding. There are three nestlings in the robin nest that I failed to remove in time after the 1st brood fledged, and they are HUNGRY. All day long Mama and Papa robin bring juicy crawlies to the nest. Mama and Papa robin aren't shy; they will bring food even if we're sitting directly below the nest. But they don't like power tools. Go figure. So I made a point to stop now and then and give them a little space. Got eight step frames built and 4.5 installed. I thought I'd hurt more today than I do, but other than some morning creakiness that washed away in a hot shower I'm good to go. But first, work. |
|
||||
Y'all over here transplanting whole trees, I thought I was cool transplanting a couple of herbs.
So I put together some planter boxes last summer, partly to have something to do that didn't involve the plague. Some of them weren't very sturdy (we got two different sizes), so I reinforced them. But now, the ones I thought were ok are breaking down. First I transplanted the chives and sage to a different box, a couple weeks ago. Those weren't too hard since they were smaller, but the sage didn't take too well to being moved at first. Seems to have recovered now though. Over the weekend I moved the rosemary and thyme. On the one hand they're hardier plants; on the other hand they're a lot bigger. I'm keeping an eye on them but so far so good. On the job front, it's my second week now. Been going over some documentation and the roadmap and stuff. They're pretty much throwing me in the deep end, but that's ok. I'm more comfortable taking on big projects rather than just futzing around with maintenance. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk |

Wave wave, sorry for causing concern and thanks for the PM @JackieLikesVariety things have been somewhat overwhelming here of late so I haven’t been inflicting words on the world much. Partner has surgery Monday which will hopefully be the beginning of a return to some sort of balance.
![]() I didn’t realise it had been that long, I had been making a point of checking in regularly. Zzzzzzaaaaasaaaaaapppppppppppp |
|

Thanks for checking in, thylacine! I hope your partner's surgery goes well and that the recovery is smooth.
Work is crazy-pants. CRAZY-PANTS! Jebus, my vacation just cannot get here fast enough, but I have a bad feeling I will be putting in some hours here and there while on vacation. I really hope not, because I'm burned out. I only take one vacation a year and I need this. I need to talk to my boss next week because if I end up putting in hours while on vacation, I want to be compensated for it. I am already working 12+ hours a day just to try and make sure I don't have to put in hours, but a situation cropped up last night that has thrown a large monkey wrench into the works. None of it is my doing and I'm not sure my influence will change anything, but I have to try. Long story short: One of our offices in Eastern Washington had a remodel. The whole thing has been bollocks from the beginning. The process started well before my arrival to USDA, but then everything was put on hold until last fall when it was dumped in my and the acting AED's lap. We worked our asses off obtaining supplemental funding for both the remodel, the furniture package, CONEX storage, and moving the stuff to the CONEX. The purchasing office held up things because they weren't moving the paperwork along which held up the production of the new furniture. The final drawings and plans were submitted to the contractor for the furniture package and ordered in May with an estimated completion date of 10 September. The lessor of the building has lost patience with my organization because of all the screw-ups and delays (not caused by me or the acting AED). I have managed to be in his good graces, but he can be cranky with others. However, I just found out yesterday that the furniture may take longer. We JUST worked out a deal with the lessor for continued storage of our CONEX on his land through the end of September. Now, I may have to go back to him. I'm pissed and he will be too. I hope to find out more positive news today, but I have a feeling it won't be good news. I really hate buying furniture from UNICOR, and I am sick to death of COVID being the excuse. The bad thing is he may decide that we'll have to move the CONEX or find storage elsewhere which means obtaining additional funding to pay for all of that. The problem with that is that it's the end of the fiscal year, which will be a huge problem. Fingers crossed I can get this all squared away. Hm, let's see if I can post something positive. I can, I can! The birds that come to my feeding station are still just a blast to watch. Additionally, when I turn on the sprinkler in my yard, they flit and fly back forth just in and out of the water's reach. They do it as a group, like they're playing, it's just fun to watch. Time for a third cup of coffee. I'm gonna need it today! |
|
||||
I hope you can get things squared away enough to relax and enjoy your vacation, taters!
I've had too many trips marred by "urgent" emails stealing my attention. Last month I flung the emails at someone else and decided the world could turn without me for three days. Many other times it's not been worth the associated guilt and fallout that would cause, though. Speaking of time off, I took the evening off from working on the steps last night. Played with my spinning wheel (the "tick" had gone away but came back ![]() |

Good luck to your partner, thylacine!
![]() Taters, I hope things get better at work very soon, and that you get the time off you need without being disturbed. Solfy, I hope you take a vacation day, too. I've been doing yard work, and yard work, and yard work. Today, Mr. Duck cut down a bunch of dead tree limbs, and I was dragging the first bunch to a new out-of-the-way wild spot, when I looked down to see a perfect little blueberry bush! And then I looked around and found about a dozen more! I have no idea why they've all popped up (well, yes I do: changing light conditions due to hurricane damage, and the diversion of a tiny, wee natural "spring" nearby), but I'll take 'em! In other news, my daughter has learned that she can use her canceled-due-to-COVID airline tickets any time until next September, so she is planning to visit Nova Scotia again next July or August! I can't tell you how much this means to me! (I was going to fly west if she couldn't fly east, but the point is WE HAVE PLANS NOW!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In yet other news involving my daughter, she and my son-in-law are about to become Sudden Empty Nesters. Presently, both of my grandsons (19 and 21) are living at home, as is the nineteen-year-old's girlfriend. But all three of them just rented a brand new apartment together! What a shock the empty nest is going to be to daughter and son-in-law! A rather welcome one, I think, lol! (But the young adults will be missed, too, for sure.) |

Went to Ikea yesterday since I was in the area. It was the first time in at least two years. Didn't get a lot, but did get another brick of tea candles for the candle lanterns and a package of the frozen meatballs and a packet of the sauce mix to make Swedish meatballs. Did not get the lingon berry jam, neither Mrs. Larsen nor I likes it very much.

Yard/garage/moving sale tomorrow, we have been cleaning this house like crazy for the last five weeks...First, I would ask any Raffe within a 250 miles radius to travel to us and bring copious amounts of money, buy everything, gosh, we'd appreciate it.
It's just crazy. We had no idea this would happen like this. |
|

Good luck to you, Oxirane!
Emiliana, I know just what you mean about short hair and "mask ears". Once I cut my hair I had to toss a couple of masks with non-adjustable elastic; I really didn't look like myself while wearing them! ![]() When discussing with Mr. Duck the fact that my daughter will fly east to visit us next summer, I learned that he had been secretly hoping that we might drive west--because he really wants a long road trip (not towing our vintage trailer, though). So, I said to him, why don't we plan a shorter trip, and maybe meet our good friends S and D near Algonquin Park in Ontario? Yes, he said! And yes, said S and D! But THEN, a good friend whom S and I used to work for, posted on Facebook about his current "joyless existence" (he's a retirement-age workaholic who is still very, very busy workaholicking), and I thought... maybe? So I messaged D last night, and he wrote back, "Yes, me and [his awesomely awesome wife] deserve this!" I've started something!!! ![]() ![]() On my agenda for today: yard work, yard work, and more yard work. Happy Saturday to you all. |

Best of luck, Oxi!
My whole family makes fun of me because I order crepes with lingonberries and buy lingonberry jam. They made fun of my "make-believe" berries. I happen to like them and find them delicious on crepes. While I talk about how epically busy work is, I work with great people who believe in teamwork and are always ready to lend a hand if needed. This is what makes this job bearable. The other stuff is annoying as hell, and I wish HR and PMO would get their shit together, but not everything can be perfect. Duckie, your trip sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun! I love road trips! I really like the off-the-cuff trips, but that's just not possible because it's impossible to find places to stay anymore without a reservation. Well, unless you want to stay in some slimy, crappy room somewhere. I'm not quite that adventurous. I don't need luxury, but I do need clean. I have my hair appointment today. I'm a little nervous. It's been over three months so I could let my hair grow out and repair itself, but I don't know if much can be fixed. We shall see. While the damage is mostly repaired, I have weird grow out in the places where the hair literally broke off in the shower right after I had my hair done three months ago, so I have these "layers", which I DO NOT WANT. Fingers crossed. I know it's only hair, but I am impatient by nature and am over having messed-up hair. I'm looking forward to having the grandkids over tomorrow. It should be fun. We can't really go anywhere because we only have a car seat for Zoe, but we'll have fun in the backyard and in the house. Maybe we'll use our Gorilla Cart/Wagon and take the kids on a walk in it. We'll see. Hopefully, the kids are feeling well and in good moods. I should stop at Target and see if they have a splash pad or pool for the kids to play in. |

Thank you, taters and Duck!
It was probably the nicest weather day we've had in upstate NY this summer, a little breezy, a lot sunny, and if you sat in the shade, it was perfect. In the sun was a little hot, but not oppressive. Got a lot of stuffed moved at the yard sale, not the big ticket items (snow blower, ladder and table saw), but didn't expect to - they are on FB MP. As a family, we made 600ish, blew $20 on some breakfast sandwiches for middle son and me, then $60 on pizza for the crew, but that wasn't the point. We moved some stuff, and towards the end of the sale, a lady stopped by and said, "I just dropped a bunch of donations at a church in Milton (25 minutes north) that collects for two weekends, then they have a big yard sales for two weekends. They do that three times in the summer". Evidently, they were in the collecting phase. At 3 p.m., we closed shop, packed up 80% of the items, 10% went back in the house. 10% ended up in recycling or the dumpster bag, put the 80% in the back of BIL's truck, drove to said church, we pulled into the assigned area, and they helped unload us. A 'thank you' from the pastor, and we were on the road. At this point, I would estimate, we are down to 40% of the stuff we had even four months ago. And it's spread across the entirety of what we own - clothes, furniture, linens, tools, 'things'/games/DVD/etc., 90% of all of the books. And I'm probably not counting 'other things'. |

It's amazing how much stuff one accumulates in 22+ years, plus the crap we drug up from Balwmer, most of which was purged during at last three dumpster purges we've had over the last 22 years, and, yet, stuff from Charm City is still being found. I read about you going through it, and it is a lot to deal with. And it was difficult at first, but we are down to the final decisions as we begin to pack to move. Things have one of three destinations at this point, one, head to the OBX, two, head to a donation place (friend/charity/church) or three, dumpster. It's crazy and emotional - our dining room is now empty and it echoes, creepy - but the rocket launched successfully, successfully intercepted the Moon, fell into the proper orbit around the Moon, we've moved into the lunar module, we've released properly from the Command Module, we are in a controlled decent on target to the landing zone, we're just waiting for Neil to say, "Houston,..."

Way to go, Oxirane!
Taters, I hope things went well at your hair appointment. A couple of weeks ago, when Mr. Duck and I were traversing the province, we ducked (ha ha) into Halifax solely to eat at a Thai restaurant. And that one quick lunch unleashed All The Thai Cravings, so tonight I am making a fabulous red curry with chicken. (The secret to its fabulousness is using Maesri brand curry paste.) Yesterday I did a ton of physical labour, so today I mostly puttered around the house. Oh; and I cleaned the fridge! Not a bad couple of days all in all. ![]() |

Ugh, it's been a couple days. I've been sick as a dog since Thursday, ejecting unpleasantness from both ends of my digestive system but still having to work because self employment does not include PTO. I thought I'd turned a corner but when I got up this morning (after basically sleeping from 1800 to 0730 waking only enough to feed critters or hit the bathroom) but soon after waking my stomach went south in a big way and it took almost two hours to get it settled enough to take my meds without immediately ejecting them.
Texted my friend who's been helping me and found out his daughter was in a nasty car accident last night and is in OHSU with a pneumothorax and an L4 compression fracture. Apparently she was checking her navigation and drifted a bit, clipped the tail light of a pickup truck, then overcorrected, spun a couple hundred feet and hit the median. She got herself back to her parents' house somehow, probably via Uber, and when the shock was wearing off her mom (a very experienced ICU nurse) determined she was NOT, in fact, okay and took her off to the ER where she was subsequently admitted. Here we see the immense advantage of having a family headed up by two health care professionals--if she'd gone home she might have died. This kid is my honorary niece who has the worst damned luck with vehicles! So yeah, I'm just gonna lay on this couch all day watching Grey's Anatomy while trying not to barf or shit my pants and waiting for updates. Never rains but it pours, right? Oh, and stoopid Kosh finally managed to flip himself over the neighbor's fence to go play with her dog, thank goodness it's the only place he can manage the feat, he just wanted to go play without the fence in the way. Which means that fence repair is in my near future. Yay. |

Update from her mom, she's still waiting for an inpatient bed and will have to have the chest tube in for a couple days and will be wearing a brace for 4-6 weeks but luckily no surgery required, thank goodness. Her 21st birthday is tomorrow and this sure puts the kibosh on their planned celebration of going wine tasting.
Me, I'm just hugging the couch waiting for this all to pass. Literally, unfortunately. I hate being sick, this is literally only the second time I've thrown up in the six years I've lived here in the shed and it was over a decade the time before that. I just don't DO this sort of thing and it has put me all out of sorts. On the plus side, I stocked up on canned juice and soup and stuff last year when COVID first showed up as a just in case and it's coming in handy right now. Pomegranate juice especially, it has calories and has that nice tartness that settles my stomach down marvellously. I'm very glad I have this stuff because ain't NO way I'd be able to make it to the store right now. |

Jesus, Smartie! That all sounds horrible! I'm glad your honorary niece will be okay and I hope that you're feeling better soonest! I hate being sick too.
Took Polar to the vet yesterday for what was a very expensive visit. He had x-rays and blood work done along with an exam. I am waiting on the labs. I guess his knees are shot; there is little to no cartilage at the joints, which explains a good bit. They sent him home with tramadol and an appetite stimulant. I am guessing the exam was painful for Polar because they called yesterday and asked if they could lightly sedate him and of course I agreed to that. I don't want him in pain. However, he seems worse off now than he has been. In the wee hours of the morning, he was crying because he couldn't seem to get off the couch, so my husband helped him. This morning at 4:30 he was still outside. I broke up a cheese stick to get him to eat because he didn't eat yesterday and he didn't eat it. Next, I gave him the appetite stimulant and the tramadol and I'm waiting for that to kick in. He came in momentarily but was acting skittish around me, which he NEVER does. I am hoping the pain he's experiencing subsides and that today is just residual stuff from what he went through yesterday. I'm not sure I'm a fan of doping him up on tramadol all the time. Time to look into CBDs for him, I think. Back to work today, but I only have four days to work and then I'm FREE for two weeks. At this moment I've decided what I get done is what I get done, and not to sweat the small stuff. LOL! We'll see how I feel at the end of today. I know I can't cover every contingency, but I really don't want to be working during my vacation. |
|
||||
Poor baby! I'm the same way about stomach bugs. I get one about once a decade, and that's plenty. A good bout can make you lose ten pounds, but it's a horrible way to lose weight.
I'm glad your friend's daughter won't need surgery, but that's still rough. I hope her youth helps her to heal quickly. |
|
||||
Nope, moar barfings this morning and I could barely get through morning chores without collapsing. I have a call in to Kaiser advice nurse to see if there's anything else I should be doing but aside from probiotic yogurt I think I mostly have it covered. Might try some Bear Creek cheese and broccoli soup loaded up with rice and steamed potatoes and maybe a bit of chikin tonight, we'll see how that goes. Guh.
Poor Polar, I wish I could give him a cuddle and a scritch, poor baby is having such a rough time. ![]() |
|
||||
I hope you're feeling better, Smartie.
We got the lab results for Polar and it's not good He has Anal Gland Adenocarcinoma which is a fast-moving and very aggressive cancer. At the moment, it doesn't appear that it's spread to his lymph nodes, but they won't know for sure until they open him up. However, if cancer has spread to his lungs, surgery is not recommended. It looks like we caught it early because it's a very small tumor, but as I said we don't know for sure. I have to contact the front office of the vet today to get a rundown on the cost of the surgery, which will need to be followed up by chemo. I am overwhelmed, to say the least. For all of his shenanigans, Polar has been relatively easy to care for because he didn't have any health issues prior to now. And, the truth is, I am not sure that I can afford this surgery. I can't give up on him though, and I am going to find a way. It's too soon after Brandi, damn it. |
