Greatest Hit of the '70s, Round 2b: Joy to the World (1971) vs. Goodbye Girl (1978)

"Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night (#1 song of 1971) vs. "Goodbye Girl" by David Gates (#47 song of 1978)

To reduce the chances that two strong songs would meet in Round 2, criteria were used to assign songs to the top or bottom half of the remaining field. "Joy to the World" was considered to be a relatively strong contender for being Billboard's #1 Hot Single of 1971 and for earning 87.50% of the votes cast in its Round 1 poll.

One of the things this megapoll has taught me is that 3 Dog Night is probably low key the concensus favorite band of the GBB.

I dig that.

Those kids were just so darn inoffensive.

(No, really, I'm trying to think of something offensive in any of their lyrics and coming up blank.)

Joy To The World is an immediate channel change for me. The other song isn't great, but I never hear it on the radio anyway.

Maybe this will help?

You've taken my life
So take my soul
That's what you said
And I believed it all

I want to be with you
Long as you want me to
But don't move away

Ain't that what you said?
Ain't that what you said?
Ain't that what you said?
