Okay, Wolfie, I'm trying out a new spice mix product I picked up at the Asian supermarket--manufacturer is "Asian Home Gourmet" and I'm trying the Indian Chicken Curry. I'm pretty much following the package directions aside from adding red bell pepper (needed more veggies, IMO) and I'm using cooked chicken instead of raw. Also added a goodly splop of sriracha sauce because it's a mild curry and I like things a bit more heated. Anyway, it's looking pretty good and I have about a half hour to let it simmer and get the potatoes cooked then it'll go over rice. I'm hoping this turns out well because this maker has a whole bunch of different spice mixes and the nice part is they're pastes, not powders so a lot easier to get going. I also have a Thai Green Curry mix and I'll be trying that out down the line. Maybe throw some of the carne asada beef into it for protein, since the spice profile isn't all that different.
It is excellent, and pricewise it's a stellar deal, two bucks for the spice packet then a can of coconut milk. Probably works out to about the same as the TJ's sauces and there's less packaging--although you don't get a free glass jar out of the deal lol. There's the dry coconut milk powder too, that would make a ton of room in the pantry over cans and jars.

On our local nextdoor, they're griping about people starting to do donuts, or burnouts, or brodies in their intersections. I put in my two cents about the assholes who started to do one on our intersection, only to lose control and smash into out planter pot, destroying it. When I hit "post", nextdoor brought up a window which said I'd avoid getting my post deleted if I revised it according to their robo-suggestions. I hit OK, and my post had all the teeth taken out. Here are some of the words it changed to more mealy-mouthed, polite versions: "Idiot", "smashed", "police wouldn't have done anything".

Weekend update:
Worked on dialing down the stress and anxiety that had been creeping up all week, presumably because of the start of the school year and from running around the last several weekends. I couldn't stand the house condition anymore and did Saturday chores on Thursday night, which helped. I had to play all three masses, which did not help. Fluff Pupp had another round of seizures a mere month after the last round, which is worrying but there's nothing to be done but log them and carry on. (and clean up the puddles; so many puddles) I harvested the grapes and got 2.5 grocery bags full. They're on the porch waiting for me to process them. My grape processing pot was full of spaghetti sauce yesterday because I had a hankering. While it was simmering I took MD to get her school supplies and do a general shopping run. It's a little frustrating that the high school kids don't get their supply lists until school starts because the middle school and elementary kids have their lists all summer and by the end of August everything is wiped out. MD got one of the last notebooks in the entire Walmart, where we went because at this time last year Target's shelves were bare. I treated myself to watching "The Last of the Mohicans" last night, which is my favorite movie of all time. I have it on DVD but it's the "director's extended edition" where he took out my favorite lines, chopped up a favorite scene, and took out the Clannad song. I hate that DVD. I tried to pirate the "theatrical" cut that I had on VHS but couldn't find a good torrent so gave up and tried the "director's definitive cut" and found that to be completely satisfying as it restored all the cuts from V2. I will buy that version on blue ray and jettison the other one (or just hang onto the version I downloaded last night). Also watched the musical version of "Mathilda" with Swimmy. It was pretty clever and well done, but like so many musicals had too much singing. (yes, I'm aware of the irony in that statement) |

I swear I'm not medicated today, I just kind of figured out how to manage a cancer symptom and am taking advantage. It's been a long time. Maybe I'll feel like crap tomorrow, but I've certainly enjoyed today. Thanks to everyone who talked to me.
You should see how I'm arguing with the dumb people on Reddit. 😂😂😂 |

Yes! ![]() Today, two things of note are happening. In an hour I'll head out for my first day of *work in this new school year. (Helena, during our commute today, we'll be listening to an old Loggins and Messina album.) And our new-to-us 1982 VW Vanagon will arrive (via tow truck)! ![]() * Work is still a great unknown (we may be shut down due to lack of students). I might know more after our all-hands-on-deck meeting this morning. Or I might not. Shrug. |
Glad to hear you are feeling better, Helena.
Did something impromptu last night that worked out. We'd gotten a lot of chicken thighs from Costco and had marinated them in a good mix. And Mrs. Larsen called Wolfette and asked if they wanted to come over for dinner. They did and we ate grilled chicken, corn on the cob and salad. Afterwards I went to the gym and did the spinning bike (which feels like it helps the pulled calf) and did some upper body. |
I processed* the grapes last night. Got 1.5 gallons of juice that will be combined with last year's juice and converted to jelly at some future date.
Also found a disturbing number of bugs in the bottom of the grape bags. Apparently earwigs like grapes. And moths. And all sorts of other creepy crawlies, which is why I had dreams all night that they were still crawling up my arms. I'm glad that's over with. *Processed= picked over, washed, mashed, and boiled to release the juice, which is separated from the pulp/skins/seeds via sieve. |
Hooray for good days, Helena! May there be plenty more where that one came from.
![]() Earwigs like everything, Solfy, you should see the song and dance routine I went through just to eat an artichoke I grew in the garden. ![]() It's cloudy today and might even get a spit of rain, yay. We could certainly use it. |
Helena, I'm so glad you had a good day. I hope you have more!
Earwigs seem very abundant this year and have caused serious damage to some of my flowers. I was pretty annoyed, but I hope it won't be so bad next year. I'm not particularly eager to use pesticides because of the birds and Polar. I have ladybugs arriving again, but I don't think they'll help with the earwigs. I could put out traps, but honestly, I'm at the point with my flowers where I'm ready for fall and less work. Work is crazy, and my patience for incompetence, wishy-washyness, and lack of accountability are at an end. Conversations were had, and more are coming. Looking forward to a long weekend, even if I opt to do nothing. |
A Helena sighting! Glad you had a good day, and I hope you have more of them.
Gorgeous day here: about 70, sunny and cool. I dread the 90+ that's coming back this weekend. Have I told you today how much I hate heat? I have been running full bore at work since last Monday and I am tired. I just up and worked from home today. I did tell my boss, but since I worked until 10pm last night (told her that as well), she didn't say a word. It's all because of a work snafu. I'll be brief: I work with not so great people. My immediate boss is okay, and a few of my colleagues are, but higher ups, not so much. I'd say more but it's long and tedious and why relive work.... Taters: I think we work for related people. |
It's RAINING, y'all! Like for reals actual rain, not just a thundershower splat, it's raining and looks to do that all weekend. YAY! The dogs were so happy to get a brisk toweling off when they came in after potty time, it's been a minute since they've needed it and they enjoy it so much.
Maybe this will dampen down that Camp Creek fire that's trying to mess up our drinking water. ![]() |

For all that I do love the days of crystal clear air and gently wafting greenery, I must admit that it's a lot more restful to the eyes to get the cloud cover back. I wore long pants and a sweater over my shirt for the first time in months and went out and made some money--low key and no hassle, just the way I like it. I took last week off due to the world being too much with us of late but ended up making money anyway--I have a friend from out of state who has me send stuff on the regular and that came through, plus I didn't spend money on gas so that's an extra $60 in my pocket AND I returned the fuxxord headlight bulbs for a $35 refund so depending on how you look at it I got paid for staying home and doing random house projects. I love it when a plan comes together.

Tonight's low here is 58F, but the dreaded 90s are coming back ALL next week (starting on Saturday). And NO rain forecast until last next week.
UGH. I worked until 10pm Tuesday night. This week has been brutal. But here's the thing: it was hard because I had a deadline. I HAD to get my OPAC cleaned up (online public access catalog, which isn't open to the public, but never mind) so that our data transfer would be clean. I had to do all this because my subscription to the reasonably priced cloud-based OPAC ended today. So, I worked like a dog to get it done. I had told my boss and the woman who does our budget several times that my sub was ending 8/31. I was told that I had to get my data into a downloadable file so that when our new OPAC (not public access) contract was signed, I would have everything ready. So, that is what I DID. Then yesterday, I just said in passing to my boss that tomorrow is the last day of my current OPAC. And she freaked out. I told her 5 times about this over the past month. So now today, she and Budget Lady come to me and tell me to ask the proprietor of my current OPAC if he can prorate it until Dec. Apparently the contract negotiations for our new OPAC aren't going well. I have 2 libraries so 2 subscriptions.. 2 hours later they email me to say I can't get BOTH prorated; just 1. (wth?) Fast forward to the guy calling me back. I explained all this nonsense to him and he started to laugh when I got to the whole "I can only have 1; choose wisely Luke" bit and he extended my subs (both) until Dec AT NO CHARGE. And he said he did it because I've been a good customer since 2010. I told Budget Lady and Boss... and they were astonished. I swear to God... I do not have an MBA or anything like that, but these people don't know how to do business. NONE of this needed to be done in panic mode. When the decision (higher up) was made to go with a new OPAC (last January), I was to be the last market to be changed over BECAUSE I had this sub ending in September. So none of this was impossible to foresee. Maya Angelou said that people will forget what you say, but they will never forget how you made them feel. My feelings about this can be imagined. I am very tired. I hope this made sense. God love you for reading, if you did... |
That is one hell of a long workday, rigs. I hope you get to enjoy your weekend now. All of that made perfect sense to me. Not the silliness of people who should know better, but the whole dilemma. I'm glad things got sorted, but I'm sorry that you're the one who had to deal with all the fallout from people ignoring what clearly could have been dealt with earlier.
I deal with similar types of deadline issues. I tell people for months or weeks that something needs to occur by a specific date and outline what will happen if we don't make it happen. Everything is blithely ignored until the very last minute, which forces me to jump through my ass to get shit done. It's annoying and tiring. I need to learn to stop caring so much; it's a skill I haven't quite mastered. I enjoyed the lovely rainfall yesterday. It was soft, and everything got nice and wet. However, we're back up to 80F and sunny today, with an expected high of 88F tomorrow. I'm ready for the fall. I've reached garden fatigue and am ready for frost so I can quit caring for it. But it'll be a while, so I continue to feed, water, deadhead, etc. At this point, I'd like one less chore to worry about. Right, time to start the dishwasher and then hop in the shower. Places to go and all that jazz. |

the change over to my "new" job (new corporate overlords) has been an absolute cluster fuck with no end in sight.
as of today I haven't been able to bill for or document on patients since Tuesday and no way to figure out who is due for recertification, without which it isn't legal for me to keep on treating. ![]() oh well! I'm making good money for now and the fall apples are OUT and delicious! TGIF!!!!!!! ![]() |

The lackadaisical attitude of managers, that last minute freaking out bullshit and complete inability to plan out work to suit a deadline is a major reason why I don't work for people any more. I'm an organized person, I like things to go chill and easy and know how to plan to make that happen, then those fuckers come blasting in with their seagull screeches and splash shit everywhere and it all goes to hell. Fuckem and the horse they rode in on!
Today looks like perfect driving weather, the clouds have cleared, all is fresh and lovely and washed clear of dust and the high temp is supposed to be 80F. Noice! ![]() |

We're in Aspen for a wedding. Fortunately not one I have anything I have to do at. This is Wolfette's best friend going back to pre-school. "Aimee" was over at our house or Wolfette was over at her house pretty continuously until they went to college. We met Aimee's fiance at Wolfette's wedding and now they are getting married. Drive over wasn't bad at all and we will wander down mainstreet to find some dinner eventually.

Well, after an inauspicious beginning my day turned out pretty nice. The vet messed up getting Kosh's refill scrip called in so last night there was leakage but they got it figured out--just in time to have to go to freaking COSTCO on a SATURDAY during LABOR DAY WEEKEND!!1! Yikes! I ducked in the side door and hit the pharmacy as fast as humanly possible then GTFO there before I started stabbing people.
Logged into Uber app in the parking lot and made my nut and then some in 3.5 hours, thanks to two back to back Asian food orders with hidden tips. See, when you accept a trip Uber only shows you a total of the base pay plus tip, but they only show tips up to eight bucks, guess that helps cut down on cherry picking or who knows WTF they're thinking. Anyway, took like thirty pounds of pho out to Gresham, then twenty five pounds of Szechuan food back the way I came and they came through bigtime, $12 and $15 tips respectively. Guess some Portlanders appreciate those of us who labor on Labor Day weekend lol. As a nice little fillip I caught an order from the Burgerville near my house where I haven't been for a few days and got to banter with the counter guys and on my way out I heard one of them tell the others that I'm his favorite driver. *preens* Then my last order was a bona fide mission of mercy, bringing Gatorade, electrolyte drinks, green juice and Tums to a poor person afflicted with alcohol poisoning, poor guy. Dropped his CARE package and I was literally five blocks from home. You really can't get it scheduled any better than that! AND I might have a line on another side gig with a friend that would be a nice little boost to my pocket if it all works out so overall--good day! ![]() |

Weekend update:
It was too hot to do anything substantive. I've been waiting all summer for hot weather, so I wasn't complaining. I mostly hung out on the porch reading "Educated" by Tara Westover, which I found very well written and interesting. I brought Eldest home from school on Saturday, though she had to go back into town for a job interview on Sunday (she got the job). We brought home the desk that was already in her apartment, and I spray painted it back into respectability with an awesome award-winning new spray paint that can be purchased at Home Despot. Swimmy decided to build jig saw puzzles. The 150 piece puzzle didn't take her too long so she got out a 300 piece one. It stumped her, so I took over and found it the most awful heinous miserable stupid rassafrassin puzzle ever. Whether by intention or not, nearly every piece was identical and would connect with every other piece. This made it impossible to judge whether a piece was in the right place except by looking at the photo (of a peacock). Coupled with entire portions of the puzzle being all the same color and you have a recipe for frustration. I mashed at least eight pieces in wrong places and called it a night at 12:30 last night and plan to throw that puzzle in the trash. (including the piece that fell on the floor and was mistaken for a Dorito by Fluff Pupp and lightly chewed) I moved Eldest's desk and yet another load of random stuff back to her apartment and she should be set for quite a while. I swore I'm not moving any more furniture for her for the rest of the year. It felt good to embrace a little sloth. I'm hoping September is kinder to my nerves than August was. |
We had cool, cloudy, occasionally rainy weather for the weekend and it was very welcome.
Solfy, you might want to scope out these ZenChalet puzzles--I got some on Amazon Vine and passed them around to family to get their take on them. They're made of wood, every piece is unique and the puzzle includes mounting supplies to turn them into wall artwork should you be inclined. They're a bit pricy, but my mom LOVED the one I sent her (the parrot one) and had a ton of fun putting it together. There's a ton of them, and I think that the fact that it's a puzzle plus an art project just about justifies the price tag. |
I wish I could share our idyllic weather with you all.
![]() I still have no idea what I'll be doing this year, work-wise. None of us have a contract yet, and it's still unknown whether I'll be instructing or doing admin work. I just don't care at this point, I truly don't care. ![]() On a brighter note, we are loving our new-to-us VW van. I'm gonna give it its own thread! ![]() |

Well, we're back from the wedding. It went very well, Aimee was positively glowing with happiness. We hung out with the groom's crew quite a bit and they were a hoot and were great fun to party with. Met the father of the bride's older brother (who I'd never met before) and had a great talk about his long career in the navy. Two other women from the high school crew were there and it was great to see them. I hadn't seen either since we dropped Wolfette off at college for the start of freshman year. The bride's mom and I conspired together and skipped the wedding cake and instead went to do heavy damage to the chocolate dessert bar. But they kept refilling it and we had to admit defeat. The food was top notch and the best wedding food I've ever had. Hung out with the groom's dad and it turns out he winters with his fishing boats near where we want to spend the winter. (He owns a fishing charter operation that runs up north during the summer.) Got to hang out with the bride's 3 sisters and catch up on what they had been up to. B's toddler was the flower boy and was adorable and really good natured.
All in all it was an awesome wedding and we had a wonderful time. We loved the hotel we stayed in and now are planning to go back there next year during the fall leaf season. Last edited by Wolf Larsen; 5th September 2023 at 12:34 PM. |

You say that, but I think you might underestimate both your risibility and our ability to let it entertain us.
Got a nice score today, was working here and there and got an order going out to River Rd in Milwaukie, a bit of a drive but it's so pretty out there. Anyway, dropped it off, did another stacked order that coincidentally ended up dropping me about three blocks from home and since I really needed a pee I went home and while I was on the potty I checked my payments and the tip from River Rd, which was presented as $8 was actually a $20 tip and that put me over my target for the day so I locked up Agnes, changed into comfies and now I have some fully loaded beer bread in the oven, all stuffed with bacon bits, sharp cheddar and green onions. The mix has been sitting around for a while so it might not rise properly but hey, ask me if I care. |

Have fun and good luck, Jag!
Helena, I've been wondering about thylacine as well. I miss her voice here. Also for Helena..."our" commute today was the foggiest I've ever driven in! I had to remove all of the zip from my usually-zippy driving! So, it was a bit of a bore. It got a little livelier when we listened to The Rolling Stones' new single, "Angry"! I'm thinking of you, my friend. My work situation has been (mostly) sorted out! (The scheduling is still up in the air.) I won't be instructing, except as a substitute instructor when required. I'll work 20 hours per week as an administrative assistant, and mostly I'll be helping My Favourite Coworker design and run a course on Getting To Know Your Community...which is exactly the sort of thing I love to do and would almost do free just for fun. ![]() For awhile it was assumed that I would run the community course, so I've done a lot of prep for it already. When the course was "taken away from me", for about one minute I felt sort of snubbed (although the decision wasn't personal, and in fact everyone knows that I was the only one who had any excitement about it). And then RELIEF started flowing over me. Because-the-provincial-government-is-doing-weird-things, if I had run the program, I wouldn't have had any support (as my favourite coworker will have MY support) because a new admin to replace me wouldn't be hired for "two or three months". So I would have had to do SO much work on my own time, which wouldn't have been fair but which I would have done. So. R-E-L-I-E-F! And I'll get to be a "guest speaker" in several classes, running a diversity, equity, and inclusion workshop, etc.. Also--and I can only say this here (I'm kind of itching to tell my boss, but I won't)--with the departure of one of our instructors over the summer, the vibe when all staff are together is SO different...SO much better and more chill. Since I don't believe in jinxing, I'll go ahead and say it. I think this might be an excellent school year! And that's enough about me. Happy Friday to you all! ![]() |
Wait, I lied. There's more about me.
![]() I had to start work early today (to let a repair person in), and I want to leave at my regular time, so I've just been cruising the net/doing personal things for awhile. And I've just finished a bit of redecorating in the classroom. There is one main/big desk for the head instructor, and I've always used a different desk toward the back of the room. From the back, it was hard for me to see the head instructor...and that was just how I wanted it because she would never stop ![]() I'm settling in, baby! And back on the clock I go. I love you guys. ![]() |

Good morning!
Jag, I hope all goes well with the lake trip. duckie! I'm so glad things are no longer in the air, the work atmosphere will be better, and that you're happy with the whole thing. I've also wondered about thylacine. I hope she is well. The weather will be pleasant today; sunny with temps reaching mid-70s. Not too hot and not too cold. Since it's my RDO, I'll tend to my lawn and do other chores. That's probably the extent of my plans for the day. Although my work week was short due to the holiday on Monday, and today is my RDO, it felt very long, stressful, and somehow loud. So, I'll use today for quiet. We'll help our son move sometime this weekend, so I should get my chores out today. Okay, I need to finish my coffee and get on with the day. I was out of bed at 2:30 a.m. this morning, but about an hour later, I decided that was stupid and went back to bed until 6:30, which is late for me, so I need to get crack-a-lackin! |

Ha ha ha ha ha, you guys. My job description just changed again. Like, just this minute. ![]() ![]() I don't even like roller coasters!
