I will admit to being a lazy old phart, so I'm not going to search out EVERY ONE OF THESE to see which ones are actually worthy, but I will note a number of non-winners that have stuck in the public consciousness much better than the winner *
  • "Cheek to Cheek"
  • "I've Got You Under My Skin"
  • "Pennies from Heaven"
  • "Jeepers Creepers"
  • "Blues in the Night"
  • "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"
  • "Chattanooga Choo Choo"
  • "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive"

* OK, maybe they stick out to me because my mother sang them or something like that. Isn't my consciousness the same as the general public consciousness ?

Zeen, you probably also know Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and Chattanooga Choo Choo just from general osmosis/elevators.

You all know "Lullaby of Broadway," even if you don't recognize the title.

Here's Ella Fitzgerald's cover version to jostle yer neurons:

I know a lot of these songs from owning dozens of Frank Sinatra CDs. So I'm starting to get more enthusiastic for this poll.

This video has 140 million views and over one million thumbs up votes. It’s IZ, whose name none us can pronounce, singing Over thr Rainbow. IZ was a Hawaiian icon who passed away way too soon. Watch it if you want a little bit of tranquility and love.

... Checking the list for familiar songs, saw this one near the top:

"Pass the Peace Pipe"

Yes, it's as cringe-y as you might expect, chock full of racial stereotypes, and some awesome dancing that was rote for postwar musicals. I've never heard of either song or movie but I'm hoping to uncover more awkward moments of lulz in days to come.

Some titles are misleading: "Walk On the Wild Side" and "I Feel Love" are not the songs I remember.

Listen, ma'am, I took legit psychic damage from that song as a kid. I have chosen to obliterate it from my memory and I will thank you NOT to bring it up again.

Agreed, especially as the horrible earworm that won was the opposite of best, it was the worst song that year.

1976, "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky should have won. Evergreen at least wasn't terrible.

I already mentioned 1979. "Rainbow Connection" should have won.

1980 got it right, but at least 2 other songs could have won many other years. "Fame" was really deserving though.

1984, the worst of the 5 songs won.

The powerhouse catalogs of Tin Pan Alley composers like Irving Berlin ("White Christmas," "God Bless America," "There's No Business Like Show Business," "Puttin' on the Ritz") and Cole Porter ("Begin the Beguine," "It's De-Lovely," "Another Op'nin', Another Show") have leaked into our collective consciousness over the last 100+ years thanks to commercials and also cartoons. In 2095 we'll have TV ads for fifth-generation Wegovy meds using "Call Me Maybe" and nobody will remember where that song originated. Just like now.

I'm surprised to learn some of these were written for their movie. "Eye of the Tiger" , "I Just Called to Say I Love You", "Up Where We Belong", "Take My Breath Away" - I just assumed these were cheesy songs chosen for their movies after the fact.

So, I guess we know why "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" didn't get a nomination - they have rules about nominating a song twice.

1980 got it right, but at least 2 other songs could have won many other years. "Fame" was really deserving though.

1984, the worst of the 5 songs won.
1984 probably should have been Against All Odds but the serious Phil Collins backlash had started to take hold.

Quite the opposite:

Quote:
In 1985, Phil Collins was passed over to perform his nominated composition "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)". According to representatives of both Collins' record company and Columbia Pictures, this was because the producers of the telecast were not familiar with his work. Ann Reinking performed the song instead, with Collins sitting in the audience
Wiki.
'85 was also the year when Collins played both arenas at Live Aid, so I'd say the backlash was still a few years away. I think we got saturated with Another Day in Paradise.

Could be, though for me Sussudio was a big part of it.

Also, the producers of the telecast were certified living-under-rock persons. LOL

It's five weeks to Oscar weekend. I'll post the final batch tomorrow and then use the weekend to prep. If there are no snags, rules and first polls on Monday.

If Yzma's villain song had stayed in Emperor's, I'd say *it* got robbed:

I've removed my commentary from the posts with listings. And added bolding to the first batch.

@Rebo
Can you move all the my posts with the lists to the top of the thread. I'm thinking that linking back here for reference once the poll starts is a way of keeping track of the nominated and winners.

Now I'm just gonna have to learn how to make polls.

Play in round starts Sat. 2/3.

I'm going to lose the few coolness points I might have earned, and say "Can't Stop the Feeling" is a great song and should have won 2016, Moana be damned.

I've collated the entries into a separate thread here. Will this work?
