Here's my thinking on this: a great performance video is heavily reliant on the band and the song. It doesn't depend on finding visuals that complement and enhance the music, it depends on the band playing a killer show. A movie is about piecing multiple songs together into a story or a flow. I don't think anyone would vote for a performance video if they didn't like the song.

But to me, a music video is more about the director and artist's vision for the visual representation of the song. It's a self-encapsulated entity: what story do I want to tell, what emotion do I want to evoke, how do I want the audience to interpret this song. I can love a video without loving the song.

This isn't to take anything away from concert movies and performances - I think Stop Making Sense and Purple Rain are two of the greatest movies ever, and I'd rather watch performances from them over 90% of the current entrants. But it's a different medium from videos like "Take on Me," "Weapon of Choice," or "Don't Come Around Here No More." And this poll is for the latter.

Besides, what would megapoll be without arbitrary rules to piss everyone off?

In the 2nd episode Leia Forman does an imagination performance of the video and song. It was funny, but made much funnier by the timing of seeing the video for the first time in years, or in my daughter's case, ever. But when Lisa Loeb actually appeared, it was a serious LOL for me.

The total entries will be 384. We'll have an initial round of 128 matchups, then the winner of each of those will be matched up against a new entrant from the remaining 128. I considered 512 total, but that would mean an initial round of 32 groups of 8, which seems too long (and I didn't want to resort to Greek letters). Groups of 16 also seem like too many for videos.

There are 176 auto-qualifiers, thus the 208 open spots.

You essentially already did. My goal was to give everyone equal opportunity to nominate videos, while still filling in the gaps. So if 20 people submit entries, everyone would get 10. But most people don't submit that many, so the extras are available for the more prolific among us. And those extras are distributed equally, which is why Zeener "Mr. MTV" Diode is the only one (so far) who needs cuts.

You took two of mine out with this post, not that I would expect them to go far. But I am confused. Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown is not a fan video. It was made the year that Croce died and it was for the Sonny and Cher Show. When my mom had that show on, I hoped for the cartoon to play. It was nominated at the Chicago International Film Festival for a Golden Hugo in the category Best Short film.
As for Ring Out, Solstice Bells, what does "promo spot" mean compared to "official video?" All the old videos (if not the new ones) were for promotion. It wasn't a fan video, either.

It is probably late in the nomination process and like I said, they aren't gonna win anyway, so I am not really miffed.

"Fan video" maybe wasn't the right term, but the BBLB video was done for Sonny and Cher as you say, not by the artist. The original version has Sonny and Cher's vocals, although many versions already being played in the 80s had replaced their vocals with the original. Either way, it wasn't the artist's video.

The Jethro Tull video was made for a BBC program called "The Golden Oldie Picture Show." BBC created the videos, not the artist.
