Old Monty Python sketch reference withdrawn. It appears that it was not an act of grace, but of whim. :-)

You know, I totally loved Monty Python as a kid. I've seen every fucking episode multiple times. As well as the movies. And the albums. Well OK I haven't "seen" the albums so much as listened to them.

And even I think the Monty Python reference thing is getting old. It's not just the SDMB, you see it all over the damned internet. I think every webcomic there is has at least one obligatory joke about how ubiquitous the Monty Python reference is.

If you're tempted to make a MP reference, stop and think about it. Is this a situation you've seen a hundred times before? Then don't post it. You think maybe you're using it in a slightly original way? You should probably hold off on it anyway. Does the idea of posting the reference make you pee in your pants? Well, OK, go ahead, but don't be surprised if no one else sees it that way.

How about a completely confused MP/porn/pun mashup?

King Arthur: There's no women in our party, and I'm feeling horny.

LET US RIDE, to CUM-A-LOT .com

Patsy: It's only a muddle.

That should be enought to get me back on 'ignore'. I'll celebrate with my happy feet, and invite everyone to fight my ignoredance.

Monty Python references seem very popular among the geeky crowd, with activity peaking in the 1980s and 1990s in my experience. I don't think too many of us didn't know a few awkward folks who always seemed to interrupt conversations with MP lines, or just start reciting quotes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail at seemingly random moments.

The fact that it's still going on at the SDMB, though ... sigh. I like the Metafilter comment that it's like a secret handshake of sorts for geeks, but with so many people in a crowd doing it, as on the SDMB, it's not really that secret.

Hmm... yes. They are also part of the Princess Bride cult. In their younger years, they were ardent worshipers of Douglas Adams.

These types I found are way annoying in real life.

There are plenty of people who still like the Python quotes. I don't see any reason for not posting them. In fact, people's dislike of them sort of gives a brand new reason to do so.

Wasn't trolling. It really is bizarro world there at the moment. If I was trolling I would have made snarky comments about the modes. It's the members who are throwing two year old tanties this time.

It's Christmastime in Doperland! Don't forget that handmade gifts are always preferable to those purchased in stores. Sure, hand-knit mittens are cold thanks to the gaps in the yarn, and if you wear them outside they'll get wet and make your hands even colder, but you're supposed to adore them! Also, homemade cookies are far superior to an iPod.
