Inconsistent moderation at the Raffe

I don't carry a grudge against the modes here, but my one-month suspension was capricious and arbitrary, so I'm going to open a discussion about it with the hope of improving the board.

The pretext for boxing me was this. Someone at the board posted about problems she was having with her husband. A bunch of Raffers (mostly women) came in and told her she should get a divorce. I dared to dissent with the hive mind and I mentioned that, although the OP should make up her own mind and I wasn't telling her what to do, people get divorced too easily and a marriage takes effort. This started a whole hue-and-cry and I was suspended. (BTW, as far as I can tell, the woman who was complaining about her husband is still married to him, so if anything I had the best "advice").

Why was I suspended? It can't be because I said that you should think carefully before getting a divorce. If people were boxed for disagreeing with the majority, then someone like Andrew Jackson's Hair would have been banned a long time ago. It's pretty clear that my main crime was daring to ask questions in the Getting Started forum, or, as Giraffe likes to call it, "probing for weaknesses", because asking if you can do something at this board is obviously probing for weaknesses. The moderation here is so fragile that asking questions can make the whole building crumble.

My other crime was putting tags on my threads. I was told over and over that no one cares about tags, but there was a lot of complaining that I was tagging my threads, and Giraffe was all over the tag cloud, so he had to go change some of my tags to insult me. Which, by the way, is a pussy way to go about it. If you want to flame someone, take it to the pit, don't use your admin powers to do it behind someone's back. I've also learned my lessons that a bunch of Raffers are easily annoyed so I'll be more careful with the tags.

I don't expect an apology, but my boxing was undeserved.

P.S. Giraffe, The Man is still dominating the tag cloud, you might wanna do something about that.

Actually, you were Boxed because the sum total of your posts looked exactly like those of a troll employing a variety of tactics to try to get a reaction. We were willing to let it slide when you kept it confined to forums like BYB, but when you decided to play games in someone's thread dealing with serious real-life problems, we felt you were misusing the slack you'd been given.

As we've said in other threads, the onus is on you to not post in such a way that you're indistinguishable from a shitty troll. And, FYI, the blubbering "why oh why was I so cruelly mistreated?!?" thread? Not a strong start.

Firstly, I'm not a troll, if by troll you mean posting stuff that I don't believe just to get a rise. I only give my opinion. The problem is, my opinion doesn't always agree with the majority. If you could give an example of posts that are obviously trolling, go ahead. The truth is you can't.

There are other posters who troll here, or, to use your words, post to get a reaction. Take the example I mentioned earlier, search for posts by Andrew Jackson's Hair. Clearly a troll. But the modes here don't box him. Why? Because he never questions the modes in Getting Started. The Raffe motto was supposed to be, we welcome trolls because we love to PALATR. But the truth is, don't question the moderation here.

You're proving my point. What you hate is for someone to dare dispute a mode call. It seems to really get on your nerves. If you felt justified you wouldn't mind so much having to explain your decisions. But in fact you never do, you just throw around words like troll without any cites.

Mod calls have been disputed before, and nobody was boxed for it. I don't know your posting history, or why you might be on a shorter leash, so I have no opinion on that, but your premise that "you can't question the mods" is obviously biased.

Who is making the statement that "people get banned for trolling?" People hardly ever get banned, ever. Only a tiny handful of posters have ever been banned, and they had to work at it.

You assume wrong. A moderator made an egregious error, was called on it, and apologized. Nobody was boxed, nobody gave up the fight, and there was no wagon-circling.

I think the accusation of troll isn't meaningful when we try to identify who is a troll through and through in Platonic essence sort of way. (Though I would argue that AJH is pretty damn close to the textbook definition of a troll.) But perfectly sensible posters can be trolls. I've seen Lounsbury troll, I've seen Uthrect troll. Anyone can troll on occasion. AJH, IMO trolls at least 10 times as much as he posts something substantive.
