I just went from being a 99'er to a noob.

I feel so... young.

Looks like I'm one of those who signed up back in the day but never came back. (Hey, I have the same join date display as Giraffe: Mar 2009. Go me!)

It's pretty comical how the SDMB has no public means of communication outside of their own site. No twitter, no facebook, no nothing.

Info about the outage
This IvoryTowerDenizen posting on behalf of Ed

"SDMB service disruption

The SDMB was the target of a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack on Thursday 4/21. After several hours we succeeded in getting the board back online, but continuing problems prevent most users (including most of the staff) from logging in. We appreciate your patience while we attempt to restore normal service. -Ed Zotti"

Good luck and fare thee well.

Maybe they should try turning it off and then back on again. That always works for me.

Yep, I recently had my paid membership expire and kept forgetting to go renew it. Now I'm kinda happy I didn't put any banking info on there recently.

Well, they have demonstrated that they can send a broadcast to everyone that has a valid e-mail recorded (they did that the last time SDMB was fubar). Would be nice if they did that again this time so that people would have some idea what the F is going on without needing to poke around in a crippled system.

Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. Right now, they are at the trying-to-fly stage. Since we don't know what's going on, how do we know they have access to the email list(s)?

That's not too uncommon in a DDoS. They're probably spoofing their IP address, to make them harder to track. If you don't need a reply, then you don't need a valid IP address.

I know they don't have the best tech over there, but surely they would have noticed if the DoS was actually coming from inside the system.

Hello all you new people. You do not know me. I am from Belgium. Fenris was very nice to create this thread so we could say hello new people

"Hello new people"

I think everyone should create socks until there's a post that says Straight Dope people should come over here until they are back up so they can see the art that is the smilies of Fenris.

Who I am definitely not. Despite our resemblance

I mean, you'd have to be a really pathetic dweeb to have considered 24 hours of outage to be such an agonizing scourge of hopelessness that it drove you to a different message board. What Doper would become so desperate to continue posting his inane comments that he'd be driven to join a viciously competitive message board that might have caused the outage in the first place? (Not saying they did, mind you, just saying "might have", you know?) And what idiot would do so even after the Dope was up again?

BTW, where's the orientation seminar? Will there be booze?

What skulduggery is this? By my rough calculations, it will take me 500 years of assiduous labor just to match the exalted prestige that was bestowed on you by a mere whim of the reigning overlord. Bastards! This is exactly why we don't have feudal systems any more, the kind where you suddenly wield supreme power just because some watery tart throws a sword at you.

There's no way...absolutely no way...paid membership would be done via bank information. And SSN - nah. That's got to just be a joke, right?

I only take this half way seriously because it's a really weird board culture over there and maybe...just maybe...
