Why pugdog and not just pug?

Now don't get me wrong, it's very common to just refer to them as pugs. It's probably the dominant way of referring to them.

"Oh what a cute pug you have" or "Oh is that a pug?" or "Pugs are the loudest, nastiest breed of 'dog' on the planet."

All of those are perfectly normal. But you often hear them referred to not just as pugs, but as pug dogs.

"I love pug dogs!" or "Pug dogs snore too loud" or so forth.

I can't think of any other breed of dog that can and does take on this form. You don't hear "collie dog" or "lab dog" or "chow dog" or "chihuahua dog" etc.

So why is that? Why is the form "pug dog" acceptable and in wide use?

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that pug dog is the more common form. Just plain pug works fine, but I hope I'm not the only one who has heard them referred to as "pug dogs" and not just "pugs" at least on some occaisions. Hell, we had a pug growing up as a family and we called him "pug dog" all the time as one of his nicknames. I just came across someone calling their friend's dog a "pug dog" on the SDMB, which prompted this post.

So are there any other dogs or any other pet animals that take this form of "breed + animal" name? Or are pug dogs special in this way?

Hound dog, mutt dog, stupid dog, sweetie-dog, hunting dog, racing dog, working dog, rescue dog.

Those last 4 are more categories than names, but whatever.

Hound dog and weiner dog are good examples. I'm glad there are some other examples. Even those are nicknames for official breeds, right? Like bloodhound, Bassett hound, etc are all included in hound dog. Weiner dog is a nickname for dachshunds.

Thanks for indulging this guys!

"The German Shepherd Dog! WTF dude that old guy is creepy, why would I be talking about him???"

"cute" is probably not the operative word most guys would like to hear in regards to their wieners... dogs or not!

I haven't heard the term "pug dog" here, but maybe it's not used as much in Canada.
