Retards in Children's Cartoons
I've noticed that at least a couple of children's cartoons my kids watch have retarded characters. I'm not talking about characters who act dumb and goofy (like Elmer Fudd), but ones who seem to actually be mentally retarded in more than one way. Can anyone add to this list I was able to throw together off the top of my head?
Ord from DragonTales. His voice sounds just like when kids in school would imitate the retarded children. He is definitely the dumbest member of his group of young dragons, is clumsy, the usual cause of problems in the group, and yet is very (almost creepily) loving. He is the biggest of the young dragons (held back a few times?) and was the latest to learn to fly. Ram-Man from He-Man. His mental issues may not be congenital, as his only means of attacking is ramming things with his head, but from the look of his face I think he has some problems in his chromosomes. His voice is even worse than that of Ord, and he frequently shows a severe lack of basic comprehension. In one episode he mistakes his best friend for a monster because he is wearing a mask. In another, a small child is able to convince him to stop guarding a dangerous doorway with little effort. Whenever he is in an episode, it makes me uncomfortable like the scenes in "There's Something About Mary" with Mary's retarded brother. Goofy from multiple Disney cartoons. In the older ones, he fit in more with the other dumb characters, but I'm not sure if that was because he was portrayed more sensitively or because retards were mocked more openly by the other characters. In his later iterations, his mental retardation is painfully obvious, and seems even worse because he is the father of a child of normal intelligence, who often outsmarts him and/or is embarassed by him. |
