Sidekicks Megapoll: Round 5: Barney Rubble vs Cato
Barney Rubble
![]() In the early episodes, Barney had a New Jersey accent. It was soon changed to a deeper, more chuckle-like American voice. Daws Butler voiced Barney for the pilot ("The Flagstones"), and season two episodes 1, 2, 5, 6, and 9 only; Mel Blanc did the voice for the remainder of the show run. ![]() Cato ![]() Cato and Clouseau have a love-hate relationship, with their fights being long and vicious, as well as destructive to the furniture, and always interrupted by the telephone ringing, at which point they will become civil again. ![]() |

Agreed. Cartoon homage of Ed Norton is indeed better than Cato.

![]() ![]() "Relax, I'll get it." I think Sellers' facial expressions around 2:00 as he thinks he's snuck up on Cato and then hears the door creak are Oscar-worthy. |

I learned that Sellers would often breakdown and cry on the set of A Shot in the Dark. He was so worked up that the movie would flop at the theaters and he'd be to blame. He couldn't see how funny it was going to be. There's a scene specifically, when he's in the drawing room with all the players near the movie's end and everyone is accusing each other of infidelity, Sellers turns to stare directly in the camera with a look of exasperation. (I just rewatched the movie and that scene caught me by surprise and it made be bust out laughing.)

Barney wins with his a-judo, a-chop chop chop! move. Cato never sees it coming.

The problem with Cato is there isn't any character there other than the central gag. This is also what's great about him. But up again Barney Rubble, that's tough.
