Unvarnished Truths is a blog depicting my attempts to write about things I make, and about things that interest me. Sometimes I may try to explain why this is so, or why something was built a certain way as opposed to another, but usually I am not successful. I think about the best that readers can hope for is to be mildly entertained.

Cutting Boards and Such

Posted 13th September 2014 at 02:55 PM by Harry (Harry's Unvarnished Truths)

Inspired by the unfortunate circumstance, posted on the forum, of an expensive bamboo cutting board splitting apart, I thought I would cast all modesty aside and post a picture of my cutting board, and a related project. This is the maple and walnut cutting board in my kitchen. It's been there 10 or 15 years...the exact number escapes me.

This looks like a cutting board, and could be...

How I Spent Summer Vacation

Posted 13th September 2014 at 02:19 PM by Harry (Harry's Unvarnished Truths)

...actually, summer vacation is over, but this project has another couple of week's work still, before it's done. This is a progress picture, mostly because I'm tired of working on it today. It's a free-standing hutch for a local restaurant. The large open top with beadboard will hold the glassware. They like to use Mason jars to serve their beverages. A rollerball pen made from TruStone...difficult to work with, because tools must be constantly re-sharpened. It's the same pen I posted earlier as a fountain pen, but I changed the writing method. Changing it back to a fountain pen would take about 10 minutes.

A Fountain Pen from Braided Cable

Posted 12th December 2013 at 07:27 PM by Harry (Harry's Unvarnished Truths)

A slightly different look than the TruStone pen. The cable is buried within a block of acrylic, which is then turned into a pen shape. It also comes with the holes predrilled, making it an attractive but fairly easy pen.

...and just in case some of the youngsters are not sure what the working end of a fountain pen looks like...

A Fountain Pen

Posted 3rd December 2013 at 07:02 PM by Harry (Harry's Unvarnished Truths)

This post is in response to a PEEM I got today, asking me if I made fountain pens. I do, in fact, and a Raffer is a proud owner of one. This pen is made from powdered stone that's been mixed with a binding agent so it can be machined without returning to a powdered form. I can tell you that holding a roughing gouge until the square edges of a stone pen blank are made into a cylindrical shape is really, really hard on the wrists. Anyway, I don't make a lot of them, and I've had this one for a...
