The Dunwich Horror (2008)

Posted 31st August 2024 at 10:05 PM by Tad Cooper

Yes, I just posted a review of a movie of the exact same name. This is another version of the same HP Lovecraft story. And it was not particularly true to the original story in terms of plot, but again it was very true to the themes and feelings. It was made for TV, and the main reason I watched it is because one of my favorite horror actors, Jeffery Combs, was in it, and he was great. They moved the action from New England to Cajun Louisiana, which was an interesting change but seemed to work...

The Dunwich Horror (1970)

An HP Lovecraft movie that is NOT a Stuart Gordon film for a change. Produced by the great Roger Corman. Music by the great Les Baxter, Tiki Music pioneer! The story is fairly true to the HPL story, as far as I can remember. Not nearly as campy or as fun as the Stuart Gordon HPL movies, but it had a certain grim charm in its own, more serious, way. I really liked the late sixties psychedelic posterization special effects when supernatural things happened. And I totally loved the old house where...

The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

Posted 17th August 2024 at 09:41 PM by Tad Cooper

A former top assassin, who somehow contracted amnesia, is now a small town PTA mom raising an eight year old daughter alone. She has no memory of her former life, until it all starts to come back to her eight years later. She is eventually embroiled in a James Bond worthy plot that she has to thwart. Samuel L. Jackson supplies hilarious support as her PI who was hired to try to find out who she was before her amnesia. Lots of action, gunfire, explosions, and a fair amount of humor abound. This movie...

Dagon (2001)

Posted 17th August 2024 at 09:29 PM by Tad Cooper

Another Stuart Gordon movie based on an HP Lovecraft story. Although named “Dagon” after one HPL story, the plot is much more closely based on HPL’s “The Shadow Over Innsmouth,” which is in the same continuity with Dagon. I like that the filmmakers transported the action to a small village in Spain rather than in New England, I assume to enhance the feeling of alienation for the main characters. I also found it hilarious that the small village was called “Imboca,” which could be considered a Spanish...

Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Posted 12th August 2024 at 09:30 PM by Tad Cooper

This is being billed as a “horror western.” But I don’t think it is particularly horror oriented. It is just a regular western with a very violent third act. But it was definitely worth a watch. It starts very slow, but in a good way. Lots of Tarantino-esque dialog in the first hour sets up a bloody and violet conclusion. Basically, frontier folks in the Old West are tangling with cave-dwelling cannibals. Kurt Russell is his usual awesome self, and Richard Jenkins is very endearing as an aging “backup...
