Original Gangstas (1996)

I love this movie! It is so over the top that you can’t help but love it. Set (and filmed) in Gary, Indiana, where young punk gang members are terrorizing the town, and the old generation of gangsters, who have moved on to successful careers and a sense of community, come back out of retirement to set things right. Very satisfying to this aging movie viewer. Lots of 1970s “blacksploitation” stars appear, and it is a whole lot of fun, mostly tongue in cheek. But pretty violent, too! The OGs include...

Willow (1988)

Posted 5th April 2025 at 09:58 PM by Tad Cooper

A movie I’ve always intended to watch but never got around to it until now. Quite enjoyable, in a “young adult” sort of way. Basic fantasy about a simple farmer (who happens to be a midget from a town of midgets) who has to protect a new-born princess from an evil queen. Starring a very young Warwick Davis and an equally young Val Kilmer, along with some other famous actors. All through the movie, I kept seeing parallels with Star Wars (first movie), and then when I saw that it was written by George...

The Electric State (2025)

Posted 17th March 2025 at 10:24 PM by Tad Cooper

Netflix movie – An odd type of movie, with an unusual blend of some action, some comedy, lots of sci-fi, and a bit of sentimentality. It has sort of a “Guardians of the Galaxy” vibe. And lots of fun for the whole family! Set in an alternate future, where humans and robots have finished a war, and the humans won. Robots are relegated to a sort of internment camp. Our heroine is a young orphan who is looking for her brother in the dystopian society that results, and enlists the aid of a smuggler and...

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

Posted 9th March 2025 at 10:00 PM by Tad Cooper

Very fun live-action cartoon expanding on the classic fairy tale. Some great actors (Ian McShane, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy) and very fun CGI giants. It had an almost juvenile feel to it, but still was very enjoyable. Recommended for a fun watch that doesn't demand too much of you. Directed by the great Bryan Singer.

LOTR: The War of the Rohirrim (2024)

(LOTR = Lord Of The Rings, in case anyone doesn't know.) On Max. Done in anime style, of which I am not really a fan, so I can’t judge if it was well done or not. But from my perspective, it was pretty interesting, good plot, nice characters, and good story arc. It seemed a bit slow at first, but picked up as it went along, until it reached a nice rousing conclusion. Based on a very brief Appendix to LOTR, greatly expanded for this story. Brian Cox as the voice of Helm Hammerhand, the bigger-than-life...
