I'm going Clamming on Sunday

After being sick for 6+ weeks, I'm finally feeling better. This weekend, we in the north of Boston area will be enjoying temperatures in the high 40s. Also (perhaps equally important) low tide will be right around noon, and you know what that means...

I'm going to wade into the North Atlantic up to my belly button with a net catch bag over my shoulder and a pitchfork, and dig surf clams out of the sand.

My late summer obsession is squid fishing. Equally goofy, and equally rewarding.

Got any goofy hobbies to share?

Nothing that involves dipping my nads in ice water, that's for sure.

I photograph too and I can't tell if I'm mediocre or good. I know that I'm not great because unless it's a top .1% shot I can't tell if other people will like it or not. They praise the strangest pictures and are meh about a lot of ones I'm proud of. So even if I were good at Photoshop, which I'm not, I don't know enough about which photos I should put time to finish well like great photographers do. (Then there's the people skills of people photographers I don't have but I usually consider people an obstacle to my pictures )

I don't know what you're bitching about, the camera is doing all the heavy lifting.

i went clamming once on the south Oregon coast, around Coos Bay. A reporter from the World took me out, we got a shitload of clams. He showed me how to steam them, mixed 'em in with a cream sauce, poured it over pasta ... oh, heavenly!

Well, um, it was in 1997 and my camera was in Colorado. But yuh, it happened. One time. When my wife and son joined me a couple of months later, i tried to replicate the experience. It was a horrible mess.

Do you use a clam shovel or gun? I always found the guns easier, but that's just me.

I actually use a standard, 4-tine pitchfork. We'd probably get a better spread with a shotgun but it might be harder to dig out all the little pieces.

I remember walking out to the receding surf, singing that Huckleberry Hound song:

"O my darling, o my darling, o my darling clamming tide..."
