That's it. I've never heard of a killdeer before. Beautiful bird.

They are indeed. A couple of interesting things about killdeer (besides their appearance): they often make their nest on the ground, in gravel. The eggs are speckled and blend in very well. Also, when approached they will run away from the nest with one wing sticking out at an odd angle, pretending they're injured to lure away predators.

A killdeer used to nest in the gravel beside the parking lot at work. I saw it do the 'injured' act many times. I could be almost on top of the nest before I saw the eggs, and that was with knowing where it was. Disclaimer: I never stepped on an egg or unnecessarily disturbed the bird. But the nest was near the gate which led to the shipping dock in back and I opened the gate almost every morning.

There must have been a nest in the area cause they did the broken wing dance. This is the area I saw them in.

If you blow up this pic and look along the tree line. Across the open water you'll see two white RVs. Then just to the right of those you'll see a small white dot. That's my car.

I have a super good camera that I just bought a couple of weeks ago and very little talent. But I'm very patient and I took a lot of pictures this morning to get those!

All the other hawks in the neighborhood are just shaking their heads at that last shot. "Hezekiah is such a putz."

Crappy picture, my cell phone is OK, but the camera is not the highlight, then I send it to my Gmail, download to my laptop, upload it to post image, resize it for message boards, and post the link...and the columns turn out wavy...

But, thank you, it really turned out well, the garden and mulch that is, and we had five days of near-perfect weather here...

It rained here for most of the Memorial Day weekend, but we did get a new visitor that didn’t seem to mind the swamp our pasture has become.

My best guess is “Night Heron”. We sometimes see a Blue Heron which is much larger, but this is the first time we’ve seen this bird.

3acres, those are good sized - growing up in Maryland, we had a bunch of those on the farm, we never bothered them, and they never bothered us...they are good to have around...

Glazer, what is that specifically?

from this morning's walk

I posted photos in a facebook group and they ID'd this huge plant as Adams Needle Yucca. that's the first two photos.

(now if I could just figure out how to post more than one photo at at time from imgur to fb)

also, some lovely groundcovers are blooming. I recognized one as a sedum.
