Meritorious May Miniraves

I finally found some sandals that actually support yet cuddle my feet. They're as ugly as all hell, though. They're Hoka Infiniti Hike sandals. I wasn't planning on spending this much, but my feet are becoming a pain in the ass, always aching and feeling hot. These sandals are like walking on marshmallows, yet they have great arch support.

I walked all over in them today and my feet aren't aching nor feeling like they are being poached.

I've been wearing Hoka walking/everyday shoes for years now. They are the best.

Yep, there'll come a time when the only shoes one can wear are bfugly. I can only dimly remember a time when I could wear a pretty pair of high heels.

Other shoes with terrific built-in arch support are Vionic and Ziera. And those are spendy, too.

Today is annual cleanup day in our 'hood. So I've been putting out all kinds of stuff that previous owners have left around. This included a whole bunch of decayed soaker hose, lumber, pieces of concrete and a decaying sawhorse.

And there was light...

Yesterday, we finally got the LED ceiling lights installed in the grands' "clubhouse"! Our daughter's house came with a 12X16 outbuilding that the previous owner used as an art studio. Up until last week, Daughter and SIL pretty much used it as a junk room/trash can. But they got their asses in gear and cleared it of trash and organized the remaining stuff so that FCD and I could do some work in there for them.

First, we installed a mini-split so they'd have heat and air out there. SIL tried to help, but he has a short attention span... another tale there. Anyway, we got the HVAC up and running last week, so all that remained was for us to get lights installed. Unfortunately, that involved cutting access holes in the attic floor along with a lot of cussing. But yesterday afternoon, at long last, the lights were installed and working. We still have to go back to patch up the attic floor, but for now, the formerly semi-dark room is now brightly lit. Huzzah!!

The grands are excited about their clubhouse and we're excited to be about done with that building.

I need to remember to look for these....I will not remember, dammit.

meanwhile, my rave. Thanks to the fact that my brother made me his beneficiary, I am now in a position to buy a house.

I put in an offer on one yesterday and hoping to hear soon - the offer expires at 5 and my realtor said the seller's realtor said they don't do business on Sunday so I expect they will ask for an extension. I know there is at least one other offer (it went on the market Thursday).

very little is happening in the housing market so I've had to face that I need to spend a lot more than I wanted to. And this one needs a mini-split (it is from 1920 and has no furnace, just those electric wall heaters) a fridge, and a w/d.

on top of the huge down payment and all the other expenses I'm all anxious about it.

but still grateful to my brother for giving me this option. and I am SO tired of not having a closet and storing things in my car.

I went to an open house and the realtor smiled and said "you must be downsizing!" and I had to say, no, just when I don't feel competent for this at all, I am massively UP sizing! (people with silver hair are not always who you think they are)

I often get funny looks from people when I do it in front of other people. Then I explain, and I sometimes get a laugh out of them.

ETA: Heh, again. I just remembered when I fell asleep in a history class in college, Dr. C. was teaching us about the Punic Wars [Rome v. Carthage]. I woke up again when he was talking about Cato the Elder, and he'd just quoted "Carthage must be destroyed" and I muttered the Latin "Carthago delenda est".

The other students immediately around me knew I had fallen asleep, and were giving me strange looks, thinking I was muttering nonsense, then Dr. C. repeated that, and they gave me different strange looks, wondering how I knew that immediately upon waking up.

Y’all know I give out rubber ducks a lot, right? And in the past year or so I’ve gotten into “bedazzling “ them - which is taking a plain rubber ducks and adding a hat and necklace, a scarf sunglasses whatever to them.
Yesterday I got a new item to add and had fun with it. So now I have a rubber duck with construction hat on hoisting a beer.

Well, I liked it

That sounds so perfect I’m surprised you’re blazing a new duck trail.
The giant duck is supposed to be visiting our town again in the near future. Last visit was when Swimmy was a baby in 2013.

Can you post a pic of that? I used to work in construction, and we always called 'quitting time' "Beer:30". And, yeah, we were still wearing our hardhats as we hoisted 'em,.

I have a pic of it. I’ve tried posting pictures from my phone before and not been able to. Would be happy to text it to you. If you wanna message me your cell phone number and if you tech savvy enough to post it, that’ll be fine with me too

My phone is a semi-dumb phone, and it doesn't deal well with pictures. I'm still trying to figure out how to get a pic to my computer that my aunt sent me several years ago.

Simple. Merely connect the phone to the PC with a USB cable, and then shake your finger at it sternly and say, "Alright all you pictures, move out down that wire on the double!"

If that doesn't work then I guess we're scuppered.

I don't get why a fundie would be against Latin AND Hebrew. Would they prefer Aramaic or even Paleo-Aramaic? Or super-old school and Middle Kingdom Hieratic?

OK, truth be told I don't get fundies at all. They're the ones who think that the NKJV translation is the Actual Word of the Divine and never mind that it's gone through at least three layers of translation; that being in the same room with young adult middle fantasy literature or non-cubic dice is the gateway to worshiping infernal beings; that the post of High Priest should be given to someone chock full of greed, wrath, envy, and sloth; that blatant metaphors and obvious folk tales should be treated as Truth; etc.

If I had any skill at constructing an RPG system I'd try to adapt Toon for Pokemon. Because nothing points out the silliness of fundies' fears better than the pure silliness of a Pikachu's electrical strike being blocked by a cream pie to its face.

It's not that they're against Hebrew, it's that they are too lazy and uninterested to learn to read it.

If they were interested in learning, they wouldn't be fundies. Religious fundamentalists, of any religion, emphatically do NOT want to learn anything that might contradict their beliefs. This applies even more so to exact science.

Precisely. The Fundy view of the Bible is that the KJV is the version G-D himself dictated, therefore the Latin, and especially the Greek and Hebrew were Satan's own bastardization of the Lord's word. That's how they think.

It's a standard joke. "If KJV English was good enough for the Apostle Paul, it's good enough for me!" Yes, it's just as stupid as it sounds, but it's stereotypical fundy thinking.

I FOUND THEM!!!

I'm in the process of reupholstering some cushions. Two pairs of them are joined by strips that hold them against the backs of the seats (the seats face in opposite directions and share a back structure.) As I disassembled the old upholstery, I made sure I didn't lose the strips because measuring for new ones would be, well, a pain.

But the other day when my sweetie was cutting out the rectangles that would become the new seat covers, I couldn't find the strips that would serve as the patterns for new strips. We looked everywhere - even places where it made no sense to look. Last place I remember seeing them was next to my recliner as I took apart the old cushion covers.

This morning, I resigned myself to making new patterns, using strips from an old sheet. Well, when I grabbed the old sheet, what should appear beneath but the two old strips!!! For the life of me, I have no idea how they got there. All the other old cushion covers were together in a bag. The only logical answer is poltergeist.

No matter - I've got what I need to finish assembling the new cushion covers. Whew!

When MD came home from college she started a new restaurant job the very next day. Which was awesome except she had to use my car to get to and fro. With me working from home and under a work travel ban, it wasn’t necessarily a problem, but her hours and days are customer service hours which is inconvenient for me. She’s a good driver but neither of us loves her driving my favorite car I’ve ever had.

Couple that with the impending tariffs and what they’re likely to do to car prices, and we decided we wanted to add a car asap. We test drove a Ford Focus we liked, but the ones in our year/price range have sus af transmissions. We drove a beat to Hell Sentra with a dodgy brake pedal, but a friend (who works for the local massive auto auction evaluating cars) warned us away from Nissan CVTs. We tried to drive a Kia Rio and a Mazda 3 but they sold before we could get there. Basically everything has doubled to tripled in price from when we bought the teen car five years ago. Anything approaching affordable goes quickly right now.

I had resigned myself to paying much more than I wanted to get something remotely trustworthy. I browsed FB marketplace obsessively when an almost but not quite too good to be true deal popped up on a 2015 Mini Cooper. At first I thought MD would reject it - it’s the color of a school bus (I’d call it yellow, officially it’s orange) and has racing stripes. Instead we both fell quickly in love with it. Husband wasn’t home to consult and the car was listed both for sale for a flat price and was in an auction with less than three hours left.

I took a gamble and made the call to buy it. Turns out Husband also loves it. We picked it up this evening and MD is out showing it to her bestie. (I got to drive it the hour ride home through the twistiest backroads PA has to offer)
I love a deal. And silly colorful cars.

Yay for the beer-loving ducky and the new car.

After a week of almost winter weather, today will be sunny and warm. And it's Saturday!
