Pics from Shanghai trip
![]() This is the view from my hotel room in Shanghai. I wish I had more time for sightseeing and touristy type stuff, but most of what I saw of Shanghai I saw from my hotel room, a taxi or the office. I was surrounded by highrise apartment buildings, mostly vacant due to real estate speculators sitting on them to drive up the prices. I'll post a couple more, but can't post 'em all at once. |

Great view from your hotel room. Looks like an atomic blast detonating over the city.

I love the buildings in the Asian cities, especially the skyscrapers. They are incredibly unique and gorgeous.

I visited the Shanghai Expo, and spent a day walking around taking in the sights. Like GoSmoke mentioned, the architecture around Shanghai was truely amazing. What really blew me away was what a modern city it is (I had no idea). Shanghai's iconic skyline is growing, too. The other thing that stupified me was how BIG the city is. The Expo itself is 1,304 acres.
In the Asia section of the Expo, they built a bamboo forest. It's still relatively young, but I think in a couple years it will be really, really awesome. (Wait till you see a picture of the buildign that was my vantage point for this first picture). ![]() They spray mist here. I'm not sure if they do it for the benefit of the visitors or to keep the bamboo moist. Either way, it makes for a cool scene... ![]() Among the bamboo is this building. I have no idea what it is - I only stopped long enough to snap a few pictures. ![]() |

I ate a lot of Shanghai food while I was there. I didn't take a lot of pictures of the food because I thought it would be bad form. However, when I ate the pigeon I just couldn't help myself. By way of preparation, they cut it up, cooked it, then arranged the cooked pieces back into the original shape and position. I'd eated a couple pieces already, but you'll get the idea here. I wasn't really impressed with the flavor, but the presentation was unforgettable.
![]() Mmmm. Tasty. Here's a close-up of it's head. It looked like one of its eyes exploded when they deep fried it. ![]() I bought these bags of 'candy' for my kids. Turns out, it ain't candy. Bragging rights to the first one of you that can guess what it is... ![]() |

I ate most of it. I also had pickled jellyfish and lo mein noodles with squidmonster, so it was a big, weird meal and I couldn't finish everything.
I had to steel my resolve with several pints of Tsingtao beer, so I was half in the bag by the time the pigeon arrived in front of me, and feeling a bit bloated from that. |

The one on the left looks like dried hot pepper bits on the one on right looks like squid chips.

It's funny how people who haven't had to travel for business get jealous because you get to travel overseas to neat places on the company tab. I was certainly this way once. Until I got a job where I had to travel on business and then I realized that there's a world of difference between business travel and vacation. Even so, I can't help but be a little bit jealous, even though I am well aware of what a pain in the ass business travel is.

Our facilities manager was there last week, too. He arrived Sunday afternoon and left Wednesday. Poor guy. And it's always like that when he travels. |
