What's lamer? Lame people or the lamers who bitch about them?
So I spent some time over at the snackpit today because I've never actually looked at it and had no idea what all the fuss was about, and once I worked out how it was supposed to function had an... interesting time reading.
If I understand it it's a place where people can laugh at/bitch about the contents of the Dope and all its offspring boards. Running through pretty much every post that lambasts another poster (who are often described using a nickname, probably so that someone can't go there and search for posts on themselves) is a undercurrent of superiority. I mean, you can't screed against others and call them self righteous/hypocritical/annoying/stupid/retarded/trollish/whatever if you don't think you're better than them, can you? And let's not forget that this is all behind a screen of cowardice... I mean, anonymity. So the people writing these posts are obviously so secure in their superiority they're willing to stand by everything and anything they say. Or not. Is this about right or have I missed something? Sure, the solution is not to go and read it again (don't worry, won't be making that mistake twice) but I'm genuinely confused as to why it's better to be the kind of person who goes to some hidden board to bitch facelessly rather than actually, you know, own your own opinions, than be the kind of people they bitch about.

Before the splinter boards, the nonny boards served the function of posters being able to discuss issues that weren't allowed on the SDMB or were allowed but would garner posters (sometimes undeserved) bad reputations for criticizing the administration. Those discussions still take place there but not to the extent they once did. They were also a good place to get juicy gossip which was sometimes true and sometimes not. CarnalK's site has a good link mine of interesting information that was mostly dug up by nonnies.

Well, I have a hard time getting too worked up about it, because it's anonymous. So you lose a lot of any subtext that might make it through otherwise in a text-only medium.
I expect some of what goes on over there would be folks ribbing each other. That part, I have no problem with. There's plenty of that going on here, and when it's all playtime you can do extra things by putting on anonymous sockpuppets. Even still, some of it is a bit harsher comedy than I can turn out. Or at the least, if my comedy becomes to harsh, my target can approach me and I can apologize. Or giggle at them, depending. But probably apologize. As to the screaming at the folks in all seriousness... eh. I suppose sometimes people need a way to vent pressure, and they also want some validation that they're not the only one feeling it. And they don't want their posting privileges at the original site to get infringed or, more importantly, they don't want to have to carry the social baggage of having come out and called someone an idiot. Particularly if they do that and everyone disagrees. So there's some potential for cowardice to be had. Overall, I expect some people get to play there, and some people get to be mean there. As for the latter, it's no different than folks having a group email thread or similar; you just have the opportunity to peek in on it. If I were you, I'd refrain. The snarkpit is anonymous not because we're necessarily cowards, but because people were getting banned on the Dope for what they said on the snark boards. I don't say anything on there that I would be afraid to say under my username anyway. Except for "I shit my pants." That's just embarrassing.

And the people who are serious in their insulting of Dopers, or Raffers, or whatever Boarders? If it gets too vitriolic, I get uneasy. I want to avoid stuff like that. It's bad for my blood-pressure.

It was actually the stuff that was really personal, like dissecting a poster's medical/psychological history and collectively bashing them that I thought was pretty low, IMO, and I'm pretty sure people wouldn't be saying the kind of stuff they did if they had to put their own name to it (well, their own username, not that that tells you much naturally). Of course, again, the solution is to not read it, I got it.
And I did consider that I was opening up a recursion field by starting a thread about people who talk about people who talk about people etc etc, but decided to do it anyway.

The thing is regarding the Lynn Bodoni thing, most of the snack is because she brought this on herself.
She's got diabetes, she's overweight to the extent that she has been and is confined to a motorised chair whenever she's got to move more than a yard or so, but she still talks about things like frying grilled cheese sandwiches in bacon fat as a snack. Guinastasia's another target, because she's not changed in the whole time she's been on the Dope. A nonny dug up her livejournal from, like, 2005 or something. Everything she's posted there is stuff that could have been (and in some cases HAS been) posted by Guinastasia within the last few months or so. She's still bitching about the same things she was bitching about five years ago, and has made no appreciable efforts to change. The nonnies can only snark on what people give them. They snark on me for over-posting about my husband's illness. And you know what? There have been points where that has been the focus of my world, and I've found it colouring every interaction I've had. And that shit can get annoying. Hell, I've read some stuff I've posted during bad spots and just about felt like slapping myself. They didn't just snark that out of nothing. There are plenty of posters who don't get snarked on. Why? Because they don't post retarded shit about themselves all the time. Because they don't post about how they're doing exactly the same thing they've done 500 times before, "BUT WHY ISN'T IT WORKING?" Also, the snackpit is a good place to find interesting threads on the durp without having to, you know, actually go and read the place.
