Summary:

Gwyneth Paltrow is doing a "challenge" where she has to survive on $29 worth of food for a week. Her grocery list annoyed a lot of people for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it only works out to 936 calories a day, less than half of what most normal people have to eat. Jsgoddess is lecturing us on how very reasonable Gwyneth's choices are, because somehow jsgoddess missed the memo that the food was supposed to last for a week. And she bitched at us for it.

How do you get it to work? You go to google.com and enter the bolded text into the search text field and click "google search." the little maginifying glass because once you start typing you get a preview of your search results and that "google search" button disappears because google is dumb.

I don't mean to sound snarky but maybe I don't understand the question.

site:boards.straightdope.com faithfool & og is a little better, but it returns hits with both faithfool and og on the same page. So, not necessarily instances of faithfool using the word og.

Google doesn't speak VB. You can't pass VB fields as search criteria. You can only try to trick it into limiting the results -- hence the "view single post," which will work b/c Google indexes all the pages, and your location, which limits it to your own posts and not replies to you.

But since I only found one instance it might not be working. :-(

I am high functioning autistic - and I have eating issues from some medications I have been or am currently on. Well, and I have some food allergies - mushrooms can kill me, coconut based products give me the multiday shits, clams cause projectile vomiting and oysters&mussels cause projectile vomiting and the shits. After those 3, I stopped trying bivalves.



While I will in general try damned near anything as long as it isn't rotting or an insect, I do have periods where I simply can not eat anything strongly flavored - even the idea of eating something like a simple piece of pizza is met with nausea. Then I recourse to plain rice and steamed chicken with some salt. And it sucks to spend a day cooking something intricate and interesting to suddenly get a whiff of it and have to run for the bathroom, and go sit in the fresh air until after dinner and the house is aired out. And eat plain rice and chicken. Or sometimes not even chicken. I can 90% of the time manage plain rice and chicken, or bread and butter, though sometimes it is plain saltines and water. <shrug> I am certain if you caught me in one of my nausea modes you would figure I am one of the picky eaters.

Due to the way search indexes are stored, using regular expressions to search would require orders of magnitude more processing for each search performed. A typical inverted index links from a search term directly to all the results containing it, whereas a regexp search term would actually need to be tested against each potential result separately. I don't know of ways to make that scale up to google size. And they don't have much incentive to work on that problem, since hardly anybody knows what the heck a regexp is.

site:boards.straightdope.com "view single post" "find all posts by faithfool" "og"

Adding "AND" doesn't do anything, as far as I know. Putting things in quotes forces them to be required, exact search terms, which is important even for "og" because if you don't make it exact, google will decide you may have meant "of" and show you those results too. I used "find all posts by faithfool" in place of your location text because it makes it easier to do this search for any username without knowing their location.
