I saw a few friends at the festival today and had a good time. I bought myself a new pentacle, rough hand worked silver, beautiful for it's flaws. I planned to stay all day, but I had had enough sun and vendors and wandering by about 2pm. I visited one of the massage booths for a wonderful five dollar five minute massage. Cutting early left me enough time to hit the comic book store, my favorite steakhouse and to catch the new James Bond movie. It disappointed, they are straying so far from classic bond as to give a ridiculous new backstory.

Yesterday afternoon was spent revising my cutouts for the light switch and outlet (I'm much happier with them this time), affixing the trim to the wall, and re-doing the shoe molding. (I'm making my own with an ogee because it's prettier than a plain old roundover; last time I tried to cut it I didn't have the router speed up high enough plus it was snowing out and my hands were freezing and it was getting dark and . . . and it was just bad). I'm getting to be a dab hand at setting the router up (I've been rotating between four different bits and two collets). I ran out of steam by dinner time, so I didn't set the nails (very few to set - I love the air nailer), paint the shoe, and putty/caulk last night. I just couldn't. So no toilet yet. Husband is painting the shoe molding
I put a pic up on FB. My parents asked me, "What goes between the boards?" What do you mean what goes between the boards?! The wall is between the boards. It's wainscot. I'm trying to convince myself that they only asked that because it looks odd in the picture with the faces of the boards primed and the cut edges wood-toned, so the finished effect isn't obvious yet. I told Mom to look at other photos of board and batten wainscot. She said, "Oh, I see. The boxes are skinnier on the one in the photo." I just spent I don't know how many hours agonizing over the exact right spacing for the boxes. *twitch* I might be a little oversensitive after three days of making sawdust. |

Solfy: I bet it's the angle of the picture, not your actual carpentry.
Had a quiet day in the library. I had forgotten that such days are possible. And... I FINISHED THE DAMNED SHELF LIST. I now know what and where every print title is in that library. ![]() Now I have to do the same at The Morgue.... ![]() |

That's a good question, it's been donkey's since we've seen him.
ETA: Looks like he last logged in in July but hasn't posted in a couple years. Wonder if this would fetch him-- @Parthenokinesis plz to come let us know how you're doing! ![]() Last edited by SmartAleq; 9th November 2015 at 07:52 PM. |

Trash Day can be a cramming experience here in Parallel Hell. When you have a lot of yard clippings AND you take down the hanging baskets AND the inside composting bin is full, it can take some doing to get it all in. But, I did get the lid to lock shut (yes, we have locking bear proof compost bins) which is all that is required.
I also took down a lot of the drip system tubing. It is somewhat sun rotted and I've decided to replace the whole tubing setup next spring rather than trying to fix the current one. |

Hey, @Glazer did you see this thread on the Durp? Scroll down to about post #39 where gaffa posts a buncha pics about fitting a Sprinter van into a camper--he has some other posts as well, sounds like they did some really interesting work on insulation and the like.

I don't know, so far - I do watch the "local" (Reno) news and not sure where it is cold in particular. I can tell you there was a good foot of snow in places (North side of Reno?) while it was maybe only an inch or two in Garnerville, where I went this morning for work. people were still driving too fast! ![]() |

Get used to it! I came down to North Lake Tahoe via Hwy 395 in winter one year in a little rented Grand Am and south of Susanville it started pouring snow like crazy. Rental cars don't have chains on board so I just slowed waaaaaay down and kept it steady as idiots in SUVs and pickup trucks went blasting past me at 60+mph. Miles later, I kept passing a whole lot of those idiots who had slid off the road and were waiting for tow trucks. We stopped in Carson City for the worst of it to pass and for the snowplows to clean up the road over to Tahoe and by the time I finished the drive it was clear and the moon was out, gorgeous. So yeah, Nevadans think that having 4WD cancels inertia, be aware of that as you drive.

I used a coat of sound deadening. A lot like bed liner. Then I used spray adhesive to apply a triple layer of insulation. First layer is reflectix. A double mylar bubblewrap. Second layer is half inch polyisofoam sheeting. Third is another layer of reflectix. All frame voids are stuffed with either two inch fiberglass or expanding foam. I have quarter inch finish plywood on the roof. And the walls have grey corrugated plastic panels that came with the van. No reflectix on the floor just polyiso and the masonite floor that came with it. I'm going to cover that with linoleum. I'm thinking a bamboo print. Would love to do read bamboo but it's too thick. I only have six foot one in height and I'm six foot.

Heh. I did that once too, in a Chevy 4x4 with 33 inch mud tires, lockers, and chains all around. That was a great drive, although kinda spooky driving right by where the Donner party had their ordeal. And yeah, idiots in shiny SUVs blasted by me and ended up in the ditch too. But those types are not confined to Nevada. It happens every fall up and down the coast as noobs learn, and morons re-learn, how to pay attention when they drive in the mountains.

Got the first coat of trim paint on the behind-the-toilet wall done and installed the toilet last night.
![]() The joint on the closet flange has a tiny leak. My bad. ![]() Husband is going to hit it with more ABS cement from the outside today and hope it welds. If not, it'll be a pain in the ass to remove the toilet, cut the section out and reglue. *crossing fingers* This is the benefit of not having a kitchen ceiling - we can be sure everything is tight and dry, and easily access things for repairs when they are not. |

I've got pot roast going in the slow-cooker. I figured since I'm home today, I'd make that and then there will be leftovers tomorrow for my husband and son since I'm sure I'll be working late.
I don't have much else going on today. I may just crack open the new book my husband ordered for me. I haven't sat down to read for pleasure in a good long time. |

I'm tired. We did an overnight in Orlando Sunday so hubby could take the girl to see frnkiero in concert. I went to supper with a former student of mine, who has turned out to be an absolutely delightful adult. We went for Indian food and had a wonderful time! My sleep schedule hasn't quite recovered, though.

NOAA is calling a big honking fall storm system within the next couple days with blizzards in CO radiating out from there, hope y'all are battened down!
Had a nice sunny morning so I spent it drinking coffee and driving around filling up more Little Free Libraries. Two more boxes down, go me! ![]() |

I just went to an Endodonist (?) - does root canals - and I'm still unclear what is going on.
no pain in general, even with chewing, but something felt wrong or different back there under that crown and when the dentist hit it with something I went YOW. so the Endo office has a 3D Xray called a cone beam*...or some such - and you can see the roots of that tooth have a black area that shouldn't be there. OK! so I need a root canal? well, yes but not necessarily now. sometime, I guess. unless I eat a lot of garlic (that cures everything, right?) and do really good visualizations...which would be easier to do if I understood any of this. the root may get infected but is not currently infected. so what IS it? irritated? something. it is something. and we are waiting to do the root canal, mostly because I need new tires. ![]() * this is such a great thing that "no insurance covers it!" - so there is $200 I will not be wasting on rent or anything |

Wind has picked up today and is going to get more intense as the night progresses. Gonna stay around until tomorrow evening, with rain added.
Had a good day in The Morgue. I drove mostly because I had to RUN to catch the 5:20pm train last night and decided to not go through that again today. I picked the best day to drive. Did not put the two together, but must remember to drive in on Veterans' Day from now on. Traffic was light and fine BOTH ways. Yay! Good luck with the endodontist, Jackie. |
|
||||
Yes, much luck and no pain, Jackie.
Quiet again at the casa, the old man's sleeping. I usually entertain a guest or two on Wednesdays, but I just never got around to asking any of the regulars over. I got three loads of laundry done today, washed all of the shirt protectors, got the old man a shower, got a nap in, and listened to an hour of a mostly coherent story about a SF author ToM met once. I kept the schedule, the house is still standing, everyone's alive and there wasn't even any fussing about anything today. |
|
||||
No one I recognized, he was kind of mumbling and I was distracted chatting with someone going through things. The story seemed to involve testing the first skyhook reverse parachuting operations. Then an anecdote about the parking situation at a radio telescope facility. I paid enough attention to make the occasional intelligent comment.

I made the mistake at work of presuming a coworker would find the Starbucks cup controversy as silly and inane as I do. Got my head nearly bitten off.
'Tis such a shame that I can't bring up the correlation between people that get wrenched about such stupid things and people who fly off the handle and can't handle their emotional reactions like adults, but wouldn't be prudent. Not at that juncture. |
|
||||
And I hear that Dunkin' Donuts has entered the fray by releasing their own holiday cup.
Won't someone think of the children?! Windy as hell out there. Started raining last night, hard--like someone was throwing buckets of water against the house. Lashing is the perfect word for it. Jeepers. ![]() |

I have been pleased to see that most of the people I know who would be the "There's a war on Christmas!" types find the Starbucks cup thing to be stupid. It's nice, because these are not all people who are big on common sense, bless their hearts.
It's still in the high 80s around here, which is warmer than usual for this time of year. I'm ready for a bit of cooler weather, or at least less humid. My in-laws arrived at the beginning of November, and the hot just kills my mother-in-law. Theyre staying at the nearby campground since they have now bought their new, bigger camper (house sold; new camper acquired for full-time RVing). if there is a site available in January, they may stay on, but there are people who have the right to stay there first. If they don't come, then there may be room. I'd like for them to stay on--they were unobtrusive in our driveway, and now they're even less so. They're coming over for supper tonight, and it will be the first time we've seen them this week. |

Get used to it, supposed to rain for like the next four days or so. I'm already super appreciating my covered steps. Iz niiiiiice! Plus, not falling on my ass stepping down a foot to the makeshift stair is double plus awesome.
So last night I flaked off doing something with "Oh, you can do that tomorrow night" and didn't even think once that Thursdays are when BFF comes over to watch Grey's Anatomy so no, I most certainly will NOT get that done tonight. ![]() ![]() |
